Community Liaison
(Part-Time)
The Municipality of North Cowichan invites applications from candidates with the proven skills, qualifications and abilities for the part-time position of Community Liaison. The Community Liaison will be actively involved in supporting efforts to raise community awareness and understanding of Municipal initiatives, programs and operations, including opportunities for citizen input.
The Community Liaison will support the Office of the CAO and will report to the Executive Assistant to develop and promote opportunities for public engagement and feedback. The successful candidate will possess strong administrative and writing skills in order to research, prepare, proofread and edit communications and informational content for print and electronic publication. Duties may also include participating in the planning, scheduling and promotion of major corporate special events; as well as implementing civic engagement strategies and communications projects that highlight the Municipality’s vision, strategic direction, and the Council Communications Plan. Some flexibility in the work schedule (approximately 21 hours per week) will be required in order to attend events in evenings or on weekends.
The Community Liaison will have strong organizational and time management skills, and will be comfortable taking a proactive approach to a broad range of communication issues without being influenced by personal bias. This is an exempt position and is not part of the bargaining unit.
Required Skills, Qualifications, and Abilities:
Post-secondary education in a communications field (e.g. journalism, English, applied communications, technical writing, or similar), with at least two years’ relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Advanced level skills in Microsoft Office and a working knowledge of layout and design programs, Adobe Creative Suite is preferred.
Proficiency with social media tools (Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
Excellent verbal, written and editing skills; demonstrated ability to quickly grasp complex concepts and to write for different media and audiences, including print and electronic publication.
Ability to liaise effectively with members of the public from a variety of backgrounds.
Ability to ensure quality and accuracy of key messages and timeliness of communications.
Experience working in a local government environment would be an asset.
Goal oriented with strong consultative, strategic planning and teamwork skills.
Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License; a satisfactory current driver’s abstract will be required.
The position may be physically demanding; candidate must be able to successfully perform all duties associated with the position. A medical certificate attesting to suitability for this position may be required.
