OUR COMMUNITY AND LOCATION:
When it comes to community, few people define quality quite the same way. To some, it is beautiful neighborhoods and great parks. To others, it is business opportunities. To others, it is a place abundant with natural beauty. For the City of Merritt, it is all of the above.
Situated where the Nicola and Coldwater rivers meet, Merritt is a lively community of 7113 residents. It has a welcoming atmosphere and wonderful dining and recreational opportunities. The city developed in 1893 when part of the ranches owned by William Voght, Jesus Garcia, and John Charters was surveyed for a town site.
Once known as Forksdale, the community adopted its current name in 1906 in honour of mining engineer and railway promoter William Hamilton Merritt III. The 24 square kilometres city limits consists of the community, a number of civic parks, historical sites, an aquatic centre, a local arena, a public library (which is a branch of the Thompson-Nicola Regional District Library System) and a civic centre. Merritt is nicknamed “Country Music Capital of Canada” for its wealth of country music attractions, activities, and events.
OUR ATMOSPHERE:
Enjoy a picnic in Lions Park on the banks of the Nicola River! Walk the trail along Coldwater River! Visit the museum! Visit Baillie House! Walk the Walk of Stars and check out the Country Music Murals! Within the City, explore the skate park, mountain bike park, children’s water park, hiking trail and the Kettle Valley Railway trail system … or just play a round of golf!
OUR ECONOMY:
Primary industries in Merritt are ranching, farming, forestry, transportation and tourism. Merritt is a community with its “doors open” to new business; it is strategically close to the Lower Mainland and Thompson Okanagan regions. Merritt has the location, labour force and infrastructure to allow businesses to develop and expand …it’s “where country life meets up with urban amenities”
