Trainee Safety Officer – Stena Drilling (Canada) Corp – Offshore, Nova Scotia

Stena Drilling are due to commence drilling operations offshore Nova Scotia with the Stena IceMAX, one of the worlds first dynamically positioned, dual mast Ice-class drillships.  The drilling campaign which commences in 2015, is expected to last for approximately 12 months.

An opportunity exsists for a temporary Trainee Safety Officer working 28 days on/28 days off  rotation, 12 hours per day.  Some of the main duties and responsibilities will include –

The role of the Trainee Safety Officer is one of advice, guidance and training only.  Reports directly to the Safety Officer onboard.
Stopping any job if it appears unsafe or if the job is not going according to plan.
Monitor that the installation is operated in accordance with the Safety Management System and the Safety Case.
Compile and distribute reports as directed.

Health, Safety & Environment

Participate in the STOP system, complete and submit cards after discussions.  Monitor and coach crew members to participate in STOP, carry out STOP audits and collate STOP cards.
Promote Stena Drilling’s “Golden Rules” and the rig’s “House Rules” during team discussions.
Work with Safety Officer in consulting with personnel including Safety Representatives and Heads of Departments on all matter concerning safety.
Work with Safety Officer in taking part in crew Safety Meetings and Supervisors Meetings as required.   Present topics at the Weekly Safety Meeting.
Participate in all Incident Investigations as directed by the Safety Officer.
Monitor and audit the PTW system in conjunction with the onboard Safety Officer.
Assist the Safety Officer in the preparation of Manual Handling Assessments.
Monitor Tool Box Talks to ensure that all personnel understand their own task for the job.
Comply with Stena Drilling policy for Risk Assessment.  That suitable and sufficient assessment of all risks to Health and Safety of personnel, assets or environment are carried out for all work activities.  Assist teams in completing Risk Assessments.
Monitor that crew members have a safe work site and that the tools are suitable for the task. Monitor the selection of suitable PPE.
Be aware of the COSHH requirements for the correct stowage, use, handling and PPE requirements are appropriate for the substance in use.
Work as directed with Medic & Radio Operator to facilitate Helicopter flights.
Carry out Safety Inductions as directed and supervised by Safety Officer for all personnel new to the installation.
Must be fully committed to working safely and to accepting responsibility for the safety and safe work practices of fellow crew members.
Demonstrate commitment to the Company’s Health, Safety & Environmental Policies through leadership and guidance.
Fully commit with all personnel to preventing any damage to the environment and work within Stena Drilling’s HS&E Policy and Procedures.
Comply with and monitor Stena Drilling’s Waste Segregation Policy.

Training

Undertake training onshore and offshore to comply with the Training Matrix for Safety Officer
Complete Stena Drilling’s Competence Assurance Scheme for Safety Officer within 12 months.
Complete Trainee Safety Officer familiarisation
Assist in conducting emergency training exercises onboard.
