The Position:

Under the direction of the R&D Manager and/or the R&D Lab Supervisor, the candidate will be responsible to perform day to day analytical testing on all in-process and final product samples. Conducts day to day project work in the development of products and manufacturing processes for current and new Omega-3 products. This position requires the ability to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative, and the ability to work co-operatively with other staff members.

Position Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs manual and automated testing in accordance with SOPs.
Develop and implements SOPs for general laboratory use.
Assist in designing and maintaining experiment records.
Assist in creating and maintaining microalgae stocks and medias.
Maintenance of related computer inventories and databases.
Ensure that specified chemicals and supplies are requisitioned and adequate inventory maintained to
ensure the smooth and continual operation of the R&D and QC laboratory.
Perform any other laboratory or administrative tasks as required.

Qualifications:

Education:

Any combination of education and experience providing the required skills and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying.
Possession of a BSc from an accredited university with major work in Biotechnology, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or a closely related field and a minimum of one year experience in research.
Possession of a technical diploma or certificate from an accredited technical training institution or college in Biotechnology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or a closely related field and a minimum of two 2 years of experience in research.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Experience in microbial fermentation, especially algal fermentation is an asset.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Willing to work irregular hours and in a time-shifted week.
Experience in classical microbiology skills (sterile technique, dilution plating, etc.), microscopy skills and sterilization would be an asset.
Familiarity with common laboratory safety practices, safe chemical handling, WHMIS, and MSDS.
Proven ability to multi-task and prioritize with an eye to consistently producing high-quality work and meeting deadlines in a demanding environment.
Detail oriented and has exceptional organizational skills.
Possess excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint.
Demonstrated skills in a wide range of laboratory techniques and analytical instrumentation such as GC-FID analysis would be an asset.
