The Hamlet of Cape Dorset, Nunavut is a remote Northern community with a population of approximately 1,400 people located at the southern tip of Baffin Island. The community is serviced by one airport with twice daily air service to Iqaluit, as well as a five member RCMP Detachment and a community health center staffed by five nurses.
The Hamlet requires the service of a full time Red Seal Mechanic with a strong background in repairing and maintaining a municipal fleet of vehicles including heavy equipment, large vehicles and passenger vehicles.
Reporting to the Director of Public Works the successful candidate will oversee all aspects of repairing and maintaining vehicles along with fulfilling the role of parts manager in the area of purchasing and inventory of such items. He or she will also provide administrative support to the Director of Public Works in other areas of public works on a as need basis.
Responsibilities:
Carry out direct maintenance and repairs on all municipal controlled vehicles and equipment.
Instruct staff and apprentices.
Carry out scheduled preventative maintenance and repairs.
Conduct regular inspections of vehicles /equipment to identify any repairs required. Complete work in accordance with work orders, plans and standards.
Assist in preparation and overseeing of repair projects, tenders and annual sealift orders.
Ensure request for shipments of materials and supplies are processed properly.
Ensure materials and supplies received are in accordance to what purchase order states.
Maintain accurate records are kept in relation to maintenance, repairs and inventory in a computerized asset management (MMOS System).
Qualifications:
Must have a valid Red Seal Certificate in heavy equipment with an automotive mechanics would be beneficial.
Must have class 3 valid driver’s license.
Must have Air Brakes certification.
Must be reliable.
Must be self-motivated.
Must be able to work independently.
Must be able to accept a high level of responsibility.
Must be able to manage a heavy workload schedule.
Knowledge of purchasing procedures and inventory management and controls.
Must be able to meet deadlines and maintain safety standards.
Must be able to work overtime when required.
Must be able to co-operatively in a positive manner with other staff and members of the public.
Knowledge of MMOS and Total Asset Management is considered an asset.
Ability to speak Inuktitut is considered an asset.
