DEPARTMENT: COMMUNITY & FACILITIES SERVICES
POSITION: RECREATION MAINTENANCE 1 – Full Time
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:
Under the direction of the Director of Community & Facility Services the Recreation Maintenance 1 performs a variety of general and specific labour type tasks requiring agility and physical effort related to the operation and maintenance the Sparwood Leisure Centre. The successful candidate will be responsible for janitorial services, facility maintenance, maintaining of the arena physical plant, leisure pool filtration systems, parks and other recreation facilities including carpentry and plumbing work. Other duties include installing and maintaining ice surfaces, general work on HVAC and DHW supply systems, horticultural work, servicing and maintaining sports fields, walking trails and related recreation areas and equipment. The successful candidate will be responsible for shoveling and removing snow; cutting grass; inspecting facilities and equipment; preparing required reports and performing other duties as assigned.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
Provides janitorial duties related to care and maintenance of District facilities;
Monitors and conducts repairs to the facility HVAC, DHW, heating and cooling systems;
Monitors and maintains the arena physical plant and related systems;
Monitors and conducts repairs to the pool filtration and heating systems;
Sets up, takes down and provides supports to programs and events;
Inspects, reports on and conducts repairs to parks and playground equipment;
Removes snow as required;
Installs and maintains arena ice surface;
Inspects, reports on and maintains parks, trails, gardens and related outdoor spaces;
Inspects, reports on and maintains public playgrounds;
Conducts repairs to facilities including painting, drywall, and basic carpentry;
Checks and maintains vehicles and equipment used in the department;
Maintains and repairs pumps, motors, bathroom fixtures etc.;
Provides supervision for, rents skates and collects drop in fees for public events and activities as assigned;
Maintains accurate records for the operation and maintenance of facility equipment;
Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Has strong problem solving skills and ability to work under pressure.
Must be able to utilize a computerized building operating system;
Must be able to communicate effectively orally, via email and log books;
Be physically fit and able to perform labor-intensive work;
Must have mechanical aptitude to complete repairs to facility systems effectively and efficiently;
Ability to work with the public in a positive and affective manner;
Has exceptional customer service skills;
Ability to prioritize assigned and emergent tasks;
Basic demonstrated knowledge and skills related to carpentry, plumbing and electrical systems;
Ability to conduct minor repairs and maintenance to vehicles;
Must be comfortable working at heights and utilizing lifts and/or ladders;
CERTIFICATIONS:
Valid Class 5 Drivers License
Refrigeration Operator, Ice Facility Operator Certification or Equivalent
Pool Operator Level I & II
Arena Ice Maker Certification
Building Service Worker levels I, 2, and 3
Park and Sport field levels 1 and 2

Benefits, compensation and conditions of employment are governed by the current collective agreement with CUPE Local 2698. The current rate of compensation as of 2015 is $30.47.
