Planning Technician II – City of Parksville

The City of Parksville is seeking a qualified individual to join our Community Planning and Building Department in the permanent full-time position of Planning Technician II. Under the supervision/direction of the Manager of Planning and Development Services or designate, the Planning Technician II provides technical support to the Planners and the Approving Officer with respect to development applications, data bases, and research projects. The Planning Technician II will coordinate some Department needs, such as map and website updates, as well as performing a variety of community planning functions, planning research, administrative and customer service functions. This position is responsible for responding to a variety of land use enquiries; performing research and analysis duties; assisting the process of land use applications; composing reports and correspondence; responding to staff and public enquiries; prioritizing assigned work to coincide with departmental priorities and schedules; arranging and organizing meetings of various types; assisting supervisors with planning projects; supporting the Building Inspection function and providing training of new staff.

We are seeking an individual who is familiar with land use bylaws, the BC Building Code and development processes in order to respond to basic regulatory enquiries. This role will provide the greatest satisfaction to a detail-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, involving a high level of public interaction and understands the complexities of local government. The ideal candidate will have an outstanding attitude and interpersonal skills, be highly organized and technologically savvy, able to work in an environment with changing priorities and constant interruptions, respond to new challenges and a high volume of work while prioritizing workloads to meet deadlines and handling multiple concurrent tasks.

The ideal candidate will have successfully completed Grade 12, supplemented with a technical diploma in urban planning, civil engineering, architectural or building technology supplemented by a minimum of 5 years’ experience in local government setting with at least 1 year within a planning department; or equivalent experience in a provincial government setting handling subdivision files; or equivalent combination of training and experience as a technician or zoning enquiry clerk in a municipal Planning Department and considerable experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint), AutoCAD, GIS and Tempest. Possession of a valid BC Drivers Licence and good driving record is required.

This is a unionized position. The wage rate is $35.87 per hour – after successful completion of probation (July 1, 2017 rate) based on a 35 hour work week in accordance with the current Collective Agreement.
