The Resort Municipality of Whistler is a one-of-a-kind community and was recognized this year as the number one mountain and ski resort destination in North America. The Planning department of the Resort Experience division is seeking an experienced, multi-faceted and forward-thinking Planner. Reporting to the Senior Planner, this position offers 72 hours bi-weekly starting September 1, 2015 through to December 31, 2015. The Planner will play an active role in reviewing development permit and rezoning applications and preparing and presenting related reports and recommendations, responding to inquiries, and supporting policy development related to neighborhood and resort planning initiatives.
Qualified candidates will be solutions-oriented, adaptable and possess the following minimum qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in urban or regional planning or related discipline. A Master’s degree is preferred.
5+ years of professional planning experience, experience in development planning and urban design skill.
Eligibility for membership with the Canadian Institute of Planners.
Considerable knowledge of contemporary urban design/planning theory, trends and techniques including applied experience with public engagement and stakeholder collaboration techniques.
Demonstrable working knowledge of the legislative framework applicable to planning in BC.
Experience in developing and presenting Council reports and bylaws.
Excellent verbal & written communication skills, including public speaking, presentation skills, report writing and policy drafting.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel.
Experience and/or education related to tourism and/or resort community development is considered an asset.
Familiarity with graphic design, GIS, and drafting software, such as ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Google SketchUp, and/or Adobe Creative Suite is considered an asset.
As a requirement of the position, the successful applicant must hold a valid class 5 BC Driver’s License and provide a clear drivers abstract prior to beginning employment.
