The District of Sooke is seeking a Planner II to join our Development Services Department.

As a growing community of over 12,000, located on the southern most point of Vancouver Island and only a 40-minute drive to Downtown Victoria, Sooke offers the best of coastal community living. Sooke is the gateway to the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island and offers innumerable opportunities for outdoor adventure. Historically based on the forest and fishing industry, Sooke offers a small town feel while being nearby to the amenities of a large urban centre.

Reporting to the Municipal Planner, this position is responsible for handling a full range of professional planning duties which includes independent judgement in the processing of development applications and creating long range planning documents. The Planner II is an intermediate planning position that is also responsible for providing assistance to applicants and senior staff during the development process, representing the department on public and technical planning committees as needed, communicating planning issues and ideas to other departments, providing bylaw and OCP information to the public and representing the department at Council when necessary.

Success in this role requires:

Bachelor’s degree in Planning or a related discipline
Member of the Canadian Institute of Planners (or ability to obtain membership)
Five (5) years of local government experience or equivalent experience in government/private sector
Possession of a valid BC Drivers Licence (Class 5)

The salary for the Planner II is $42.62/hour (2013 rates) plus an excellent benefit package.
