SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS
Reporting to the Ecologist – Watershed Science, this position will support the watershed science team, including the scientific support for the Credit River Watershed Natural Heritage System. Major roles include analysis and research support, as well as scientific support to develop tools for restoration and protection of the natural heritage system.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Post-Secondary education in biology, geography, ecology, environmental studies, physical sciences or related field
A Master’s degree or more than two years of experience is a strong asset
Familiarity with the ecology, flora and fauna of the Credit River watershed and southern Ontario
Demonstrated knowledge in interdisciplinary and environmental sciences, landscape ecology and resource management principles, natural heritage systems and watershed planning
Experience with analysis of complex ecological datasets
Ability to research and report on topical scientific issues
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the production and review of technical science based documents
Willing and able to work occasionally in some adverse field conditions including on steep and even terrain, in watercourses and wetlands, inclement weather, insects and water hazards in a safe manner
Good working knowledge of word-processing, data base management and other office computer software including basic GIS applications
Valid Class G Ontario Driver’s License
SUMMARY OF MAJOR TASKS
Support the implementation of the CVC’s Natural Heritage System Strategy
Conduct research and analyses to support the Natural Heritage System (e.g. multivariate terrestrial or aquatic data analysis, barrier analysis, road ecology, trail guidelines, grassland strategy development)
Support the development of methodologies and procedures to operationalize the Natural Heritage System (e.g. buffer guidelines)
Responsible for landscape monitoring, including reporting on habitat size, composition and connectivity in the watershed
Tool development to transfer natural heritage data to external departments and agencies
Analysis, interpretation and application of information related to natural heritage from scientific documents and grey literature
Participate in committees and technical teams to transfer watershed science information across groups
Respond to data requests on the natural heritage system
Work closely with GIS staff on the development of mapping products
Administrative tasks include data and file management, health and safety support for watershed science team, input to workplans and reporting
May be required to train, develop and supervise assistants as required
