Mechanic – Municipality of North Cowichan

The Municipality of North Cowichan invites applications from candidates with the proven skills, qualifications and abilities for the position of Mechanic on a full-time basis.

The successful candidate will be required to perform a broad range of duties in efficient and effective diagnosis, preventive maintenance, and general repairs within all mechanical and hydraulic aspects of a wide variety of municipal fleet, equipment and machinery including gas operated tools and grounds equipment, refuse packers, sweepers, snow removal equipment, automotive vehicles, construction equipment, and diesel engines. Deployment to other duties will be required from time to time.

Required Qualifications
Completion of Grade 12.
Possession of a valid B.C. Certificate of Qualification for Heavy Duty or Commercial Transport Mechanic.
Ten years of experience as a mechanic, preferably in a municipal equipment repairs environment; at least six years of which were as a heavy duty mechanic.
Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 3 B.C. Driver’s License; a satisfactory current driver’s abstract will be required.

Required Skills
Possession of basic keyboarding skills and ability to work within computerized inventory and maintenance records programs in a Windows environment, including Word, Excel, Outlook and GIS.
Demonstrable organizational ability and good interpersonal communications skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors and the public.
Independence of judgment and capability of working with minimal supervision.
Demonstrable knowledge of plans, schematics and diagnostics.

Required Abilities
Demonstrable ability to efficiently perform a variety of maintenance and repairs on a municipal fleet, including but not limited to, excavation, trucking, diesel, hydraulics, automotive and two stroke equipment, and small tools.
Demonstrable ability to undertake minor welding repairs.
Demonstrable ability to repair computerized engine systems and must have completed current electronic ignition system training, Cummins engine, and ABS brake courses or be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of same.
The position is physically demanding; candidate must be able to successfully perform all duties associated with the position.A medical certificate attesting to suitability for this position may be required.
Supply of the necessary tools of the trade.

Hours of work may include either or both, shift work and weekends as assigned. This is a unionized position (CUPE Local 358) and the collective agreement may be viewed on our website.
