Heavy Duty or Commercial Transport Mechanic – City of Prince Rupert

The City of Prince Rupert is inviting applications from qualified individuals for the position of Heavy Duty or Commercial Transport Mechanic in our Public Works Department. In this important role, you will maintain, service and repair a wide variety of Municipal vehicles and equipment vital to the efficient operation of the City. The applicant must possess a valid B.C. Trades Certificate in Heavy Duty Mechanics or Commercial Transport. Other duties may be assigned as required. Reporting to the Public Works Management you will be expected to follow safe work practices, meet the physical demands of the job and have the ability to work in a team environment or independently when required. This is a full time unionized position and shift work is required. The minimum salary is $36.51 per hour, plus additional premiums based on certification, based on a 40 hour week (8 hours per day between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, with a ½ hour unpaid meal break. Alternating monthly with the afternoon shift, 3:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., with a ½ hour paid meal break). Overtime may be required as operationally necessary.

Qualifications:
Completion of Grade 12 or GED.
Valid B.C. Trades Certification as a Heavy Duty Mechanic or Commercial Transport Vehicle Mechanic is mandatory.
Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence required. A Class III with air brake endorsement is preferred and must be obtained (Driver’s Abstract required).
Certification in the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program would be an asset and will be required to hold and maintain.
Must be able to hold and obtain a RCMP Criminal Record & Vulnerable Sector Check. Results of which will be reviewed by the City for employment.
WHMIS Certification.
Emergency First Aid (Level 1).
Must be clean shaven to enable a respirator to be worn as per WCB regulations.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Ability:
Four (4) years previous experience in Heavy Duty/Commercial Transport preferred.
Experience with propane, welding, oxygenâ€Ã‚acetylene, small engine repair, computers and computer diagnostics.
Forklift experience and Certified Forklift Operator preferred.
Ability to service and repair heavy duty equipment, including dozers, excavators, trucks and snow removal equipment is essential.
Ability to perform repairs on small equipment, standby generators and pumps is desirable.
Ability to supervise mechanic department employees when required.
Previous computer experience preferred (Computerized inventory of stock).
Able to follow safe work practices.
Ability to work with coâ€Ã‚workers and public in a courteous and tactful manner.
Good interpersonal skills, good communicator both written and verbal, a team player, willing to continually upgrade skills and knowledge as needed.
Must work independently and is expected to maintain a schedule of work. Any problems may result in increased stress to complete tasks in a limited time.
Must be able to work with minimum supervision and have a high level of selfâ€Ã‚motivation.
Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.

Fitness Requirement:
Ability to perform strenuous physical work on an ongoing basis in all weather conditions.
This position is physically strenuous and demanding which requires the Mechanic to be in good physical condition.
Heavy lifting, pulling and managing equipment/objects are part of the assigned tasks. Employees must be able to handle weight up to 100 lbs and able to lift 40 lb.
