We are an international consulting firm that provides professional services in the applied earth sciences for a variety of companies, including those engaged in mining, pipelines, oil sands and water resources, as well as for power, municipal, transportation and environmental management operations. BGC currently has eight offices across Canada, one in the United States and one in South America.
BGC is seeking two fully qualified and experienced Geological Technicians to join its advanced soils and rock testing team. These are permanent, full-time positions located at the company’s offices in Fredericton, NB.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidates will be responsible for a wide range of geotechnical laboratory testing duties, including those related to the performance of both index and advanced geotechnical tests, interpretation of engineering properties, numerical analyses and geotechnical design. BGC’s laboratory is a state-of-the-art facility which specializes in strength, compressibility and permeability testing of soil and strength testing of rock. The company’s testing equipment includes cyclic dynamic simple shear, and servo-controlled full-automated triaxial and automated odometer systems. The incumbent will actively participate in geotechnical investigations, and will conduct laboratory tests in support of the company’s and clients’ needs. The successful candidate must be willing and able to undertake fieldwork at remote and rugged sites, both domestically and internationally, for periods ranging from a few days to a few weeks.
REQUIREMENTS
Successful completion of a college program in geological technology or related field, along with at least three years’ experience. Qualified Engineers-in-Training will be considered for this position. Applicants must have a strong theoretical understanding of soil mechanics and experience with the advanced testing of soils. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with the application of seismic/dynamic testing (e.g., cyclic DSS and triaxial testing) for support of earthquake design is required. Experience with the integration of laboratory testing and design using numerical modelling of earthquake liquefaction and displacemenet problems in finite element or finite difference programs such as VERSAT, FLAT and PM4SAND is highly desirable. Experience with Limit Equilibrium software for slope stability and seepage analyses is required. Must have a current passport, a valid driver’s license and experience driving a 3/4 ton field truck.
SALARY & BENEFITS
The position pays $75,000 per annum, based on a 40 hour work week, along with three weeks’ vacation per year. A benefits package including extended health and dental coverage is provided, and an annual discretionary bonus plan is available to eligible employees.
