Fisheries Scientist – Oceana Canada – Ottawa / Halifax

Oceana Canada works with civil society, academics, fishers, and government to return Canada’s formerly vibrant oceans to health. We engage in fact-based campaigns designed to preserve the bounty of the sea as a source for wild-caught fish, as well as to preserve the marine ecosystem for our own and future generations.

Oceana Canada seeks a Fisheries Scientist to play a critical role in support of the success of its campaigns. The Fisheries Scientist, reporting to the Director of Science, will have responsibility for researching Oceana Canada’s campaign topics in fisheries science, oceans management and related policies.

Principal duties and responsibilities

Research and review topics related to fisheries and marine conservation to inform and support the goals and strategies of Oceana Canada’s campaigns.
Gather information through literature searches, data mining, and expert interviews; build and analyze large datasets.
Keep up to date on best practices and scientific methodologies and any innovations concerning the conservation and sustainable management of marine fisheries.
Critique fisheries policy, implementation and practice at the national and regional level.
Write, edit, and prepare reports with meticulous attention to detail. Draft science-based policy recommendations.
Develop a strong network of scientists and personal expertise in fisheries management.
Contribute as a part of a team to support the development of Oceana’s initiative to Save the Oceans, Feed the World.
Perform additional duties as needed and/or assigned.
Must be willing to accept varied workload. Some long hours, weekend events, alternative hours to accommodate international time zones and travel may be required.
Must have the ability to handle many tasks simultaneously in a dynamic work environment with speed, accuracy, and a positive attitude; show initiative, and exhibit insightful planning and understanding of abstract concepts.
Must maintain strict confidentiality in working with sensitive information, and possess excellent judgment in handling communications, expenses, personal relationships and representing Oceana Canada in a professional manner.

Requirements

Graduate degree in a relevant Science discipline with practical experience in fisheries science, conservation and marine biology.
Extensive knowledge of Canadian fisheries, science and management.
Excellent writing, editing, communication and research skills required.
Ability to build and analyze large datasets.
Knowledge of marine ecosystems, fisheries management, aquaculture and seafood trade.
Organized working style with attention to detail.
Fluency in French will be considered an asset.
The successful candidate must be available for full-time work in Canada.
