Public Safety Division
(Regular Full Time – Exempt)
Position: A regular full time Fire Rescue Services Coordinator position is available in the Public Safety Division at the Cowichan Valley Regional District. Reporting to the Manager, Public Safety, the Fire Rescue Services Coordinator is responsible for organizing fire rescue services and administrative functions including budgets and strategic planning of related division operating guidelines, policies, and procedures. As the administrative leader of the CVRD’s fire rescue services, the coordinator works collaboratively to optimize fire rescue services, fire prevention, education, training, project management and the procurement and distribution of goods and services in support of fire/rescue operations.
Qualifications: Possess a Fire & Safety Studies diploma or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. A valid BC Drivers’ License with access to reliable transportation and a First Aid Level 2 with CPR C certificate is required as well as a satisfactory driver’s abstract and criminal record check. Volunteer/Resource Management training, Emergency Management Certification and Firefighter I & II and Fire Officer Certification would be assets. A minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in the field of Fire Rescue Services and Emergency Management is required including experience in supervising and managing volunteer recruitment, selection and retention processes. The successful candidate will possess: Considerable knowledge of fire rescue services, procedures, methods, equipment, standards and rating systems employed by Insurance Bureau of Canada and Underwriters’ Laboratory of Canada; working knowledge of Emergency Management BC and local government emergency management and the relevant regulations, policies, practices and procedures; and knowledge of the principles of volunteer management and coordination. The successful candidate will also possess: effective interpersonal communication skills both written and verbal with the ability to develop positive relationships with a variety of stakeholders; the demonstrated ability to develop innovative and effective Fire Rescue Services, Prevention and Education Programs using various learning styles, training technology and methodologies; proven effective leadership and problem solving abilities including conflict resolution and customer service skills; the ability to make decisions in accordance with the applicable regulations, policies and procedures and to set priorities and perform duties under minimal supervision and work in a confidential manner; proficient skills with computers and Microsoft Office software; the ability and willingness to respond to emergencies as needed, and immediately as they occur; and, the ability to work long hours under stressful conditions during emergency situations.
Hours of Work: This position works 35 hours per week Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is eligible to take part in the flex time program. This position may be required to work a variety of shifts and long hours to meet operational requirements including days and evenings on weekdays and weekends.
Salary: This regular full time position is a member of the Exempt Management Staff with an annual salary range in five steps from $74,440.02 – $87,084.72 (July 1, 2015 rate). A comprehensive benefits package is included.
