Position: The Recycling and Waste Management Division of the Cowichan Valley Regional District is seeking a temporary full time Environmental Technologist I to fill a vacancy of up to 6 months. Reporting to the Manager, Recycling and Waste Management, the Environmental Technologist I will be responsible for assisting in performing a wide variety of technical tasks related to solid waste management and environmental initiatives, including: environmental monitoring; processing applications for solid waste systems; disseminating information; and, developing and coordinating waste reduction and environmental initiatives and programs.
Qualifications: Graduation from a recognized technical institute or community college in a related field. Preferably general experience in environmental studies or civil engineering in a local government setting. Eligible for membership in the ASTTBC as a technologist/technician, or a combination of education and appropriate training and experience. Preferably one (1) year related job or cooperative work experience in a similar field. First Aid Level I with CPR C and possession of a valid BC Drivers’ Licence. Knowledge of: the Regional District’s operations; computer operations and the ability to deal with a variety of software packages including, MS Office programs and other software; solid waste diversion processes and procedures and environmental issues; all phases of recycling, including collection, processing, and marketing and the management of solid waste reduction programs. Ability to: communicate effectively through written materials, including staff reports, advertisements, education manuals and workshop guides, public notices, brochures and pamphlets; understand and apply laws, regulations, agreements and procedures as appropriate; establish and maintain courteous, tactful, diplomatic working relationships with other employees, general public and regional Board members; be proficient in the use of grammar, spelling and punctuation; effectively operate a PC in a Microsoft suite environment (Access, Word and Excel); and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Effective public speaking and presentation skills, including delivering information and education to a wide variety of audiences from children to industry professionals plus layout and design skills for printed public and industry information materials.
Hours of Work: The hours of work are 35 hours per week Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position may be required to attend some evening and weekend meetings.
Salary: This temporary full time union position (CUPE Local 358) has a salary range in three steps – $30.53 – $31.41 – $32.36 per hour (2015 rates).
