We are seeking a self-motivated, analytical and detail-oriented individual to join the Engineering & Public Works Department as an Engineering Technologist – Traffic.
The work includes performing technical engineering and administrative functions related to the development and administration of the municipal traffic engineering program. You will be responsible for monitoring and responding to traffic, parking and transit concerns to ensure public safety; conducting vehicular traffic and transit operation and safety studies; programming signal controllers and performing field checks; and planning for road networks, traffic control systems, traffic and pedestrian safety installations. You will also be responsible for preparing specifications and cost estimates, project management, updating related bylaws and providing recommendations on traffic engineering matters to Council.
We are seeking an experienced technologist who has the ability to:
prepare detailed cost estimates, specifications and drawings for traffic sign installations, other traffic control devices, and intersection improvements ;
establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts;
communicate ideas and solutions clearly and concisely orally and in writing; and
write accurate and grammatically correct technical reports for a non-technical audience.
Along with an aptitude for problem solving and innovation, you should enjoy taking a methodical approach to your work, analyzing data, and finding innovative solutions to traffic and transit problems.
The ideal candidate will have a diploma in Traffic Engineering Technology, or recognized equivalent, and a minimum of three years of experience in a municipal traffic and transit engineering environment. Considerable knowledge in traffic engineering principles, methods and techniques and applied mathematics along with the ability to interpret plans and specifications related to traffic engineering are necessary for success in this role.
The 2016 hourly rate for this full-time CUPE position is $43.57 per hour plus an excellent benefit package including the Municipal Pension Plan. We also offer a 9-day fortnight schedule (extended hours for 9 days and 1 day off every two weeks).
