The City of Prince Rupert is inviting applications from qualified individuals for the position of Engineering Technologist.

The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of duties including but not limited to the inspection of ongoing public infrastructure construction, assisting in contract administration, processing permits, maintaining and providing direction to a variety of developers, contractors, and suppliers with respect to project scope, procurement, surveying, the maintenance of City standards and specification, working with engineering consultants, participation in the review of land development submissions, and assistance with various minor office functions and the survey crew as required.  However, the primary role of the successful candidate will be to provide both surveying and computer drafting services to the Engineering and Public Works Departments.  The successful applicant must meet the physical demands of the position, comply with and work to ensure safe work practices, and have the ability to work productively on a team or independently.  Computer skills, particularly with respect to engineering applications (inc. CAD and Civil 3D) are required.  In addition, he or she will carry out day-to-day tasks stemming from requests for technical information, counter, and telephone enquiries and monitor selected capital expenditure programs and special projects.

Qualifications

Completion of Grade 12.
Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence (must provide a Driver’s Abstract).
WHMIS Certification.
Emergency First Aid (Level 1).
Must be able to obtain and hold a RCMP Criminal Record Search.
A Post-Secondary Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology from a recognized two year program.
A minimum of two years “hands on” practical experience in the field of civil engineering, preferably working in a government environment or a construction setting involving residential subdivisions, and/or related projects.
Additional Engineering education preferred.
Level 1 or higher CAD certification or demonstrated ability (candidates may be tested).

Required Knowledge, Skills & Ability

Understanding of civil engineering methods and practices as they relate to Municipal infrastructure.
Knowledge of the fundamentals of project management, construction contracts, engineering computer applications and mathematics, and typical engineering standards.
Demonstrated proficiency in the use of CAD, Civil 3D and GIS software and the operations of EDMs, GPS, Total Stations and other survey equipment.
Good knowledge of level note reduction with clarity, grade setting calculations.
Must be familiar with construction inspection methods and compliance practices.
Ability to use good judgment and sound decision making when dealing with contractors, developers, and the public.  Proficiency in conflict resolution is required.
Ability to work effectively on a team with other technical staff and clerical employees.
Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external contacts, particularly regarding technical issues.
Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and take initiative.
Able to work safe and promote safe work practices.
Ability to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner, demonstrating excellent personal communication skills.
Proven ability to collect, organize and analyze data and to prepare clear, well-written reports, diaries and records.
Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel & Outlook).
Perform other duties as required.

Job Status:       Permanent full time – Monday to Friday
Hours:     40 hours per week – 8 hours a day between 7:30 am and 5:00 pm
Rate of Pay:     $31.07 plus premiums, a great benefit package and pension plan

This is a unionized position in accordance with the CUPE Local 105 Collective Agreement.
