The Marine Institute’s Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development (CASD) provides research and development, technology transfer, and scientific and technical advisory services to the aquaculture, seafood and marine bioprocessing sectors. Assistance ranges from basic technical information inquiries to multi-year projects in industrial research, product and process development, and systems design. The Centre operates a provincially registered seafood and food processing plant, a marine bioprocessing research facility and an aquaculture research facility. In support of its R&D activities, the Centre utilizes the analytical laboratories of both the Marine Institute and Memorial University. The Centre is typically engaged in more than 40 individual projects per year and engages approximately 15 research and technical personnel in its project activities. A high proportion of the work conducted by CASD involves traveling to clients’ place of business. The Marine Institute is an ISO 9001 registered organization.
Mechanical Engineer
(Contractual Position to March 31, 2017)
Duties
The successful applicant will provide engineering expertise in the delivery of technical advisory, product and process design, and industrial research and development services by the Centre. The incumbent will be integrally involved in the writing of research and development proposals, project reports and project management of the CASD activities. Duties include designing and developing specific purpose food processing and aquaculture equipment from concept to beta prototype; liaising with end users and equipment fabricators; designing and layout of food processing lines; designing and layout of aquaculture hatcheries; designing aquaculture harvesting equipment; developing research plans; experimental designing for conducting research for and on behalf of the seafood, aquaculture and marine bio-products industries; and performing other related duties as required. This position will be the principal point of contact with respect to engineering between CASD, its client base and public sector departments and institutions. A significant amount of travel within and outside of Newfoundland and Labrador will be required.
Qualifications
Experience (4-6 years) in related industrial engineering; graduation from a college or university with a degree in engineering, primarily in the mechanical discipline; an equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered. Applicants must be eligible for membership in Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL). A high level of competency in engineering CAD systems, statistical analysis, spreadsheet and word processing software is required. Experience in mechanical systems design and/or industrial design and layout, and experience in the food processing and/or food machinery supply industry and/or aquaculture engineering are assets. Previous training and experience in thermal processing of low acid foods, familiarization with pasteurization processes, as well as membership with the Institute for Thermal Processing Specialists are also assets. The successful applicant must be a team player, self- motivated, and have excellent written and oral communication skills. Possession of a valid class 5 driver’s license as issued by the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador is required.
Salary $64,247 to $83,436 per annum (Research and Technical Personnel VI, NAPE Local 7405)
