Chief Building Inspector
The Community Services Department is seeking a permanent full-time Chief Building Inspector to join their team. The Chief Building Inspector is responsible for directing compliance with the B.C. Building and Plumbing Codes & District Bylaws, by examining and checking construction and site plans, conducting field inspections, and meeting with members of the public for the purpose of promoting good construction and development in the District of Lake Country. Where necessary the Chief Building Inspector takes appropriate action on enforcement of codes, acts and bylaws. The Chief Building Inspector supervises all other District Building Inspectors and inspection staff. The normal work week is 40 hours, Monday to Friday, plus the option of a compressed work week to get every 3rd Friday off.

This is a senior-level professional building position that requires a high degree of professional responsibility in leadership and the processing of applications including collection of relevant information and checking plans for compliance with bylaws and codes. The position also requires decisions with respect to the interpretation of and compliance with codes. The Chief Building Inspector primarily works independently and works collaboratively with District staff to carry out inspections, maintain records and reports, deal with bylaw complaints, issue orders and notices, administer civic addresses, issue and inspect business license applications, and issue building permits to the public.

The preferred candidate will have completed a diploma in engineering or building technology, level III certification as a Building Inspector from the Building Officials Association of B.C., and level II certification as a Bylaw Enforcement Officer from the Justice Institute. A minimum of seven years’ related experience as a Building/Plumbing Inspector and / or experience in the construction industry (i.e. carpenter, plumber), with preference taken to relevant experience in municipal government. The hourly rate of pay for this unionized position is between $32.24/hr and $38.38/hr (2014 rates).
