Building Science Specialist – Toronto Atmospheric Fund

We’re working with ten multi-unit buildings to demonstrate deep energy efficiency results.

Toronto Atmospheric Fund (TAF) creates innovative climate change solutions in the City of Toronto. Since about half of Toronto’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions come from energy use in buildings, improving their energy efficiency is a key priority. As part of our TowerWise Energy Efficiency Demonstration (TWEED) project, we’re conducting deep energy retrofits in ten multi-residential buildings.

Our goal is not simply to dramatically reduce energy-use and GHG emissions in these particular buildings, but also to identify and promote best practices in the design and implementation of energy retrofits. With real-time monitoring of both equipment level and whole-building energy performance, we are driving leading-edge research into the real-world outcomes of energy retrofits.

Are you the right person to help advance this exciting project?

We’re looking for a motivated individual with solid research experience and a building science background to support the successful execution of this project.

Talk to our staff and they will tell you that working at Toronto Atmospheric Fund comes with amazing advantages. We’re on the leading-edge of urban climate change solutions and our work makes a tangible difference. We build meaningful relationships with all kinds of stakeholders – from world-class thought leaders to the people who implement change on the ground. Our strong, dedicated team fosters healthy collaboration and learning. And as part of a small organization, we each see the value and impact of our work.

This is a full-time, one-year contract position without benefits. Salary commensurate with experience.

Key activities you will be responsible for include:

Managing energy monitoring and analysis components of TWEED, including specification and/or procurement of energy monitoring equipment and services;
Participating in an Integrated Design Process to establish retrofit plans for select demonstration sites;
Measurement, analysis and documentation of all data required to complete case studies and answer key research questions;
Preparation of draft case studies documenting project outcomes at demonstration sites;
Supporting knowledge transfer to ensure findings of TAF-sponsored building science research and demonstration projects are appropriately disseminated, including via TAF’s 80X50 blog;
Analysis of grant applications and building-science-related research reports sponsored by TAF.

You will work with TAF staff and external service providers, under the supervision of TAF’s Director of Policy and Programs.

Do you have this background?

Master’s degree in Engineering or equivalent designation related to building sciences.
Specific research experience in the area of energy efficiency in the built environment.
Experience designing and implementing energy and environmental monitoring systems in buildings preferred.
Technical and analytical skills and experience in the areas of energy modeling and weather normalization of energy consumption data.
Strong statistical analysis background and experience with statistics software packages (e.g Stata, SPSS, etc.).
Strong written and verbal communications skills with the ability to clearly and succinctly communicate technical information to a lay audience.

We welcome your application!
