Building Official
(Competition 15-27)

Under the general direction of the Supervisor of Building Inspections, the Building Official reviews and processes building permit applications, ensuring that the design of proposed construction meets the requirements of applicable regulations.  The official also inspects ongoing construction for compliance with relevant regulations, and takes action necessary to ensure all deficiencies and/or infractions are corrected.

Applicants will have considerable knowledge of the BC Building, Plumbing and Fire Codes, N.F.P.A. Standards, relevant federal, provincial and municipal statutes, regulations and bylaws as well as considerable knowledge of building construction methods and materials.  Basic computer skills with Municipal computer programs (such as Prospero) and with Microsoft Office programs are required along with excellent verbal and communication skills.  The incumbent must have the ability to check plans and specifications and inspect ongoing construction of all complexities to ensure compliance with the Building, Plumbing and fire codes, City Building and Zoning Bylaws and N.F.P.A Standards.  They must also have the ability to use tact and discretion when settling requests, complaints or clarifying information and be able to prepare concise reports and correspondence.

The incumbent must have possession of an Interprovincial Trades Qualification in Carpentry or Plumbing or a diploma from a recognized technical institute in Building Technology, Building Officials Association of BC Level 2 Certification, and Plumbing Inspectors Association of BC Level 1 Certification (for plumbing specialization).  A minimum of four (4) years’ building design and construction experience is required along with possession of a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence.  A Satisfactory Criminal Record Check will be required.

This is a unionized position.  $35.44 to $37.30 (Jan 2015 Rate), based on a 35-hour work week.  This position is subject to job evaluation.  It is anticipated that this vacancy will be up to one year in duration.
