HASTe is seeking a qualified candidate for the role of Youth Engagement Facilitator in our Cool Routes to School program.
Background
HASTe is British Columbia’s leading Active and Safe Routes to School program and resource centre. Since 2009, HASTe has been working with communities across the province to encourage and support walking and cycling to school, and address traffic safety in the school zone. Over the years, HASTe has developed a number of programs that promote Active and Safe Routes to school by addressing the unique needs and interests of individual school communities – one of which is Cool Routes to School.
Cool Routes to School (CRtS) is an in-class student engagement program. The program takes a unique and successful approach to creating a school-community culture of walking and cycling by empowering students to become active school travel leaders within their schools, families and communities.
Position Summary
HASTe is currently looking for a Youth Engagement Facilitator to implement our CRtS program in schools throughout Metro Vancouver in 2016. At each school, the Youth Engagement Facilitator will work directly with a “leadership group” to develop and implement student-designed and -led programs and initiatives that promote and address barriers to active school travel.
CRtS employs a linear, three-stage process that takes students from introduction to action over the course of 10 to 12 hour-long, in-class sessions. Cool Routes to School works to:
educate students about the benefits of safe and active school travel;
enable student leaders to develop and implement projects to encourage active travel at their school and within their community; and
empower students to become leaders and role models within their schools, families, and communities.
While the process is well established and supported, the approach and execution of the program varies from school to school. The Youth Engagement Facilitator will collaborate with other HASTe and school staff to customize the program to address the needs and interests of each school and leadership group.
Primary responsibilities of the role include:
facilitating a series of weekly 1-hour long in-class sessions, including educational, planning and implementation components;
preparing lesson plans and activities, using a mix of creativity and available resources and materials, based on school and class needs and interests;
mentoring and supporting a group of youth leaders as they develop and implement their action projects;
coordinating program logistics and scheduling with the classroom teacher or staff-sponsor;
keeping the project manager up to date on program progress and activities through regularly scheduled check-in’s and updates;
recording program activities for inclusion in School Travel Plans; and
working as part of a team with other HASTe staff to deliver a comprehensive Active and Safe Routes to School initiative.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
The Youth Engagement Facilitator will manage a number of leadership groups of varying size and student ages. Essential skills and qualifications include:
Fun, energetic and creative individual with the ability to communicate enthusiasm in teaching and learning for youth;
Experience and demonstrated skill facilitating activities with youth, ages 11 – 15, in a variety of settings;

Post-Secondary Degree in teaching or a relevant discipline an asset;
Strong personal commitment to active transportation a definite plus!
