The Canadian Canoe Museum is looking for 1 energetic individual to co-lead our Paddling (Day) Camp offerings for the summer of 2015. There will be 4 one-week sessions of Paddling Camp (ages 10-14), plus a one-day Safe Canoeing camp for 8-9 yr olds. This instructor will also carry out a total of 5 days prep/wrap-up before and after camp. Paddling Camps will be certifying successful campers with the ORCKA Basic Canoeing Program. As well, the Canadian Canoe Museum camps place a strong emphasis on the stories, songs, crafts and games associated with the camp experience in Ontario.

Job Description: Co-Instruction and Coordination of ORCKA-based Day Camps 2015
Salary: $640 Weekly ($16/hr x 8hrs day). 21 camp days plus 5 days prep/wrap weeks (camp plus prep/wrap-up time) to be paid out bi-weekly.
Location: The Canadian Canoe Museum (Peterborough, ON) and Otonabee River (based at Peterborough Rowing Club)
Start Date: Camps start date July 2, 2015; instructors’ three-day prep to take place in preceding 2 weeks
Finish Date: Camps completed July 31, 2015, additional day of wrap-up to be completed during week of August 5-8, in coordination with second camp instructor
Minimum Qualifications:
ORCKA member in good standing
ORCKA Basic Canoeing Instructor preferred.
Standard First Aid and CPR (Wilderness First Aid or higher preferred)
Bronze Cross (NLS preferred)
Current and clear Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Checks
Successful Candidates Will Possess:
Experience in delivering the ORCKA Basic Canoeing program
Experience conducting and administering at least 1 Basic Canoeing course for ORCKA
Strong risk management skills and strong decision-making abilities
Proven experience with creating engaging and dynamic programs
Strong organizational skills are recommended i.e. program planning, reporting, purchasing materials, etc.
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to work with another person cooperatively as a leadership team
Camp experience or equivalent experience is recommended
Ability to liaise with campers’ parents, Education Manager, Museum staff, volunteers and Rowing Club members
Maturity and strong sense of responsibility and dedication
Proven experience and a passion for working with youth ages 8-14 in alternative settings
Comfort and willingness to be outdoors with learners regardless of the weather
Positive, upbeat and energetic and able to go, go, go!
Additional skills and interests in nature and/or historical interpretation, artisan skills, music, arts, or drama would be an asset
Knowledge of or ability to learn and run cooperative games, initiative tasks and group-building exercises
