The City of Duncan is seeking a planning student or recent graduate for a six month Temporary Student Planner position, from approximately January 4th to June 30th, 2016. The position is supervised by the City Planner in the Development Services Department.

Duncan is located on Vancouver Island in the heart of the ‘Warmland’– the Cowichan Valley, less than an hour from Nanaimo and Victoria. This compact city offers high quality living and acts as the commercial centre for a market area of approximately 44,000 people.  Duncan’s central location provides easy access to culture and the arts, transportation, all forms of indoor and outdoor recreation, high quality schools, and healthcare; yet housing is affordable.  Duncan is known as the “City of Totems” and values its culture, vibrant downtown, history, and environment.

Tasks will focus on special projects such as the implementation of the Community Energy and Emissions Plan, Active Transportation Plan, sustainability monitoring and other strategic initiatives. The successful candidate will assist with bylaw updates, research and report writing, processing development applications, responding to inquiries from the public, and public engagement.  Knowledge and experience in land use planning is required. The ideal candidate will have completed or be enrolled in a graduate-level planning program.

This is a temporary student position within the Canadian Union of Public Employees – Local 358, with an hourly rate of $20.37 (2016 rate), plus 4% of the gross wage in lieu of vacation.  The work week is 35 hours and the position will last for 6 months, beginning as early as January 4th, 2016. Candidates must have completed full time post-secondary studies within the past six months, or be a returning student.
