Organization Overview
Shoresh Jewish Environmental Programs was established in 2002 to lead the Jewish environmental movement in the Greater Toronto Area. Rooted in Jewish wisdom and practice, Shoresh’s environmental programs respond to contemporary food and ecological issues. Through experiential education and action, Shoresh creates meaningful Jewish life and builds a more sustainable and inspired community.
In 2009, Shoresh established the Kavanah Garden, an organic educational garden that models Jewish agricultural laws and environmental ethics, at the Lebovic Jewish Community Campus in Vaughan. In addition to our programs at the Kavanah Garden, Shoresh offers educational programs at various locations across the GTA, hosts an annual Jewish Food Conference, and has begun a Jewish farming venture in Hillsburgh, Ontario!
Environmental Educator Position Responsibilities:
Assists in setting up, facilitating, and wrapping up Jewish environmental experiential education programs for students/participants and community members
Ensures festivals and community events/drop-in runs smoothly at the Kavanah Garden and at off-site locations
Prepares and gathers materials for programs when necessary
Maintains the health and well-being of Shoresh’s garden sites
Maintains data log of all activities, harvests, and volunteering
Contributes to the distribution of Shoresh’s marketing materials, and promotes events and programs through digital media to get new participants and partnerships
Report regularly and work closely with the Lead Educator and Executive Director
Experience Required:
Working with children ages 3-12
Outdoor/environmental education
Jewish education
Strong knowledge of Jewish values, teachings and practices
Small scale organic gardening
Managing and working with volunteers
Personal Qualities:
Enthusiastic, warm, motivated, responsible, flexible and grounded
Open to the many ways that community members understand and engage with questions of Jewish identity.
“Get it done” mentality: is resourceful, self motivated, and takes initiative
Big picture thinker and logistically minded
Interest and experience in working with demographics including seniors and special needs
Proven commitment to developing healthy, balanced and open working relationships
Demonstrated exceptionally strong communication and interpersonal skills
Important Note
This is a Canada Summer Jobs position funded by Service Canada. Applicants must be:
Enrolled in Secondary or Post-Secondary or Vocational or Technical School
Full-time student in previous year, with the intention of returning to full-time studies in the upcoming year
15 – 30 years of age inclusively at the time of intake or selection
Canadian citizen, permanent resident or persons on whom refugee protection has been conferred
Be legally entitled to work in Canada
Other Requirements:
Valid driver’s license with access to a vehicle
Has (or will obtain) current emergency first aid certification
