Wage: $21-$23/hr, 22.5 hrs/week
HAT seeks a dynamic, self-motivated person to lead our land acquisition programs. The Land Acquisition Coordinator will work closely with the Executive Director and other staff to assess potential acquisitions, particularly covenants, negotiate terms, ensure all documentation is complete and registered with the Land Titles Office, and conducting compliance monitoring on protected lands. The position will assess the feasibility of proposed covenants, and coordinate legal agreements, baseline ecological descriptions of properties, and annual monitoring of properties. This position involves direct engagement with public and private landowners, government agencies, and other environmental non-profits. The Coordinator will assist other HAT staff in fundraising, at events, and in the field.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in biology, geography, or a related discipline, have a high attention to detail, be an effective communicator, and have a passion for conserving south Vancouver Island’s natural areas.
Habitat Acquisition Trust (HAT) is a Victoria-based land trust that conserves nature on south Vancouver Island. We achieve our mission through land acquisition, education, and stewardship programs. We work closely with community groups, government, individual landowners, and conservation organizations to coordinate effective habitat protection projects.
Preferred Skills:
A background in biology, natural ecosystems restoration, environmental studies or a related field;
Demonstrated communication skills, working with complex topics or materials;
A high attention to detail and comfort working with complex documents;
Excellent creativity, verbal and written communication skills;
Keen interest and knowledge of regional conservation issues;
Able to multi-task, manage time effectively and co-ordinate several concurrent projects;
Able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends;
Computer competence necessary (email, internet, MS Office, Access);
Sense of humour, team player, creative problem-solver; and
Capable of low intensity sustained physical labour, hiking and orientation in remote areas.
Requirements
Eligible applicants must satisfy all of the following criteria:
Post-secondary accreditation in an applicable field of study, or significant relevant experience, preferably in a non-profit environment;
Demonstrated ability in project planning, development, evaluation and management;
Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in nature interpretation, ecology, biology, resource planning, eco-restoration;
Strong interest in HAT and its mission;
Well-developed computer skills and ability to effectively use basic office technology and software (eg: word processing, presentations, web site maintenance, database management);
Willing and able to work irregular hours including some weekends;
Willing and able to undertake professional development and training as appropriate
Strong interpersonal, written and verbal skills, ability to interact and consult with individuals at all levels inside the organization and in the broader community;
Legally entitled to work in Canada;
Willing to complete a criminal record check (upon hiring) for work with vulnerable persons, including children.
Wilderness first aid certification or willingness to get certification.
