ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAM LEADER
(TERM)
The City of Lethbridge, Recreation and Culture Department requires one (1) Environmental Education Program Leader for a term position at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre. We are seeking a dynamic and motivating leader with a demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to environmental awareness and conservation, as well as a strong working knowledge of nature with an ecological focus.
TERMS: Starts Sept 7, 2015 and ends August 31, 2016 (with a possible extension)
HOURS: Shift work, evening, and some weekend work is required
Average 35 hours per week
WAGE: $26.85 per hour
DUTIES:
The successful candidate will design, develop and deliver engaging in-class and outdoor-based environmental education programs with a strong conservation focus for school group audiences (Grades 4 – 9). You will develop and facilitate year-long, project-based and community–focused learning opportunities for teachers and students in support of upcoming changes to Alberta curriculum. You will mentor and assist teachers in working with and motivating students. This position will work closely with the Nature Centre Technician and Coordinator to set measureable program outcomes and objectives and will be responsible for evaluating the effectiveness of activities and programs to ensure success. Work also includes booking and scheduling classes for monthly programs and activities, as well as promoting program opportunities. Compiling and reporting on progress of each group against the program deliverables and measures of success will be required. The work will include identifying and partnering with local organizations and local experts. You will also assist the Nature Centre Technician with the maintenance of program materials and facilities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum post-secondary in Science, Education or related field and a minimum of 2 years working experience in environmental education or related field is required. Good working knowledge of local ecosystems (plant and wildlife identification, ecological processes and basic biological concepts). Experience working with children in an instructional/supervisory role is essential. Experience in developing successful communities of practice, mentoring and working with teachers, as well as cultivating successful partnerships is essential. Candidates must be physically fit and capable of supervising groups in remote, off-site locations. Must have excellent communication skills, and must be able to work with the public in a confident, friendly and motivating manner. Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license. Defensive Driving Certificate and First Aid Certificate are not required for application but would be considered a requirement for employment.
Special Requirement: Successful candidates will be required to submit to a criminal background check prior to employment.
