SPES’ educational programs cover forest, wetland and intertidal ecosystems. The education manager will supervise 4 educators and coordinators year-round and up to 7 staff during the peak season. Our education
programs reach:
The general public year-round. This includes informal education at the Stanley Park Nature House, small group guided walks, and large event coordination.
School classes between September and June. This includes half-day field trips for mostly kindergarten to grade 7 students, some high school groups, a unique 2-day, 1-night overnight camping program for grade 4-7 students, and professional development days for teachers.
Day camp children during summer and spring break. These are weeklong day programs for children ages 7-11.

Working as a team, SPES’ Education Department reaches over 5,000 students and thousands of general public a year through outdoor, experiential programs. The right candidate is able to balance a diversity of projects and bring new innovative ideas and education approaches to the team. Throughout the year, your time is split between managing four types of programs
roughly as follows:
40% public programs
35% school field trips
15% weeklong summer day camps
10% spring overnight camps
Reporting to the Executive Director and working from the second floor of the historic Stanley Park Dining Pavilion, this is a core, fulltime position of the society.

Responsibilities
Program Management:
Research, develop and creatively promote public programs – walks, talks, outreach events and special events
Develop school programs based on provincial curriculum, and environmental research in Stanley Park
Develop displays and interpretation strategies for Vancouver’s Nature House on Lost Lagoon
Develop and promote weeklong outdoor spring break and summer day camps
Deliver professional development training for teachers regarding environmental education
Review, evaluate and update existing program content including information for teachers
Personally deliver education programs on an occasional to regular basis

Human Resource Management:
Hire, train, manage, schedule, evaluate a team of 4-7 staff and several volunteers for program delivery
Create annual work plans for the department, working to the society’s Strategic Plan
Create and maintain strategic community partnerships
Build an inclusive and supportive culture within your team and within the whole society

Administrative Management:
Maintain communications via quarterly reports, website updates, social media contributions, and media inquiries
Work with the Fundraiser and Executive Director to acquire sponsorships, grants, and other funding for Education departments; assist with proposals and create reports
Work with the Executive Director to establish the annual budget for all Education departments
Oversee administration of the Education budget and program registrations

Qualifications
Degree in related field (conservation biology, ecology, environmental education) or equivalent work experience
Minimum two years project management experience, preferably in non-profit setting
Minimum two years of experience teaching or interpretation program development and delivery
Minimum one year of experience supervising staff and volunteers
Proven ability to train, coach and manage staff
Bachelors of Education and valid BC Teaching Certification a strong asset; elementary level preferable
Strong knowledge of BC ecology an asset

Excellent writing and communication skills
Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills; collaborative work style
Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite required, and Adobe creative suite (InDesign) an asset
Self-directed, self-motivated, very organized and flexible
Value the environmental mission of organization
Willingness to work outdoors (rain or shine) with some weekend and seasonal evening shifts
First Aid, Class 5 Drivers License and Criminal Records check required
Hours: 37.5 hours per week. Permanent full-time position.
Wage: $25.41 – $30.91 / hour
