Work Term: Year-round seasonally full-time March through October and part-time November through February.
Hours of Work: Flexible and as assigned, but not to exceed 7 hours per day or 35 hours per week without express consent of executive director. Working weekends will be required from time to time as will occasional evenings.

The Education Coordinator will directly contribute to ABNC’s mission, which is to increase public awareness, appreciation and stewardship of nature in the Okanagan by providing firsthand opportunities to see and learn of the Okanagan’s unique and diverse natural history, information programs & displays, and showcasing its natural areas and features, as well as the heritage of the person Allan C. Brooks.
Job Summary
The Education Coordinator will support planning and implementation of seasonal educational programming, year-round public events and activities on and off-site, and act as the primary coordinator of all school and summer educational programs to maintain and enhance the quality of ABNC public programming.
The Education Coordinator must thrive in a team environment with limited supervision, be flexible and willing to take on new tasks and challenges, love working with public, especially children and seniors, and have enthusiasm for nature.
Key Deliverables/Job Functions:
1) School Program Coordinator:
Co-ordinate and organize all aspects of School Interpretive program, including:
training of volunteers and staff;
developing a Field Trip Showcase (for school visits and website contents);
scheduling school visitations;
work with Education Committee to update and maintain success of programs
scheduling of volunteers and staff to enable successful delivery of programs ;
Contact teachers through email, fax, telephone and/or through staff meeting visits to advertise and inform teachers of our school program packages;
Responsible for bookings, confirmations, and facilitating school tours;
Follow Grade Curriculum Prescribed Learning Objectives (PLOs) in delivering and designing the Society’s school program lesson plans;
Continue to create and assemble the Society’s teacher support package to provide pre- and post-classroom fieldtrip information;
Deliver and develop standardized outlines for ABNC lesson plans and program activities by topic; enable effective and consistent training of volunteers and staff, receipt of feedback from volunteers and interpreter staff; and, ensure continued high quality delivery of programs;
2) Summer Program Coordinator:
Create and/or update Summer Programs lesson plans;
Co-ordinate and facilitate all aspects of Summer Programs, including:
training of volunteers and staff;
scheduling Summer Program schedule with parents;
scheduling of volunteers and staff for successful delivery of programs;
contacting parents through email and telephone to complete registrations;
Responsible for bookings, confirmations, and facilitating Summer Program tours;
3) Centre Interpreter
Continue to create and assemble references to add to the existing reference material/binder for the Society’s staff and volunteer interpreters;
Create a training plan for staff and volunteers (also set dates and times for training) and train staff and volunteers;
Oversee daily work performances of Summer Interpreters and volunteers;
Provide performance evaluations and feedback for all interpreter volunteers and summer staff;
Document work activities, track program attendance and write monthly progress updates for Society archives;
4) Displays
Assist in designing new interpretive displays, programs, projects, or activities that will further enhance and illustrate the focus of the Society’s mandate;
Work with the Education and Display Committee to develop, design, create and install Society displays and features in the nature centre to reflect the school program focus and/or nature centre seasonal themes;
Facilitate creation and implementation of approved display changes (construction of such displays, etc. can occur with external help, upon approval);
5) Events, Group Tours, Birthday Programs, and Centre Programming
Responsible for bookings, confirmations, and facilitating Group tours;
Work in conjunction with other staff, including the ED, to develop and implement new and existing public programming and events;
Plan, develop and deliver summer workshops for adults in collaboration with other staff including the ED;
Liaise with Events Coordinator and assist with planning, attending and success of events;
Work with Communications Coordinator to develop and collate marketing material and information that correspond to our schools, summer camps and public programs and that can be used to update the Society website, Facebook page, twitter account, to create press releases, posters, etc.;
Document program activities, attendance, successes, and lessons learned and write monthly progress updates for Society activity archives;
Responsible for promoting, booking, confirmation, and facilitating Birthday Party Programs;
6) Membership Program
Liaise with Finance Department to track membership information, and promote membership program;
Work with ED and other staff to build and enhance membership programs;
General Duties & Responsibilities:
Maintain a professional and pleasant rapport with public whenever representing ABNC;
To be responsible for the Nature Centre’s security, including on occasion opening and/or closing in the prescribed manner;
When working on weekends, to liase by email with the Nature Centre’s ED regarding matters that will require follow-up by the ED;
To ensure the interior of the Society’s buildings are maintained in a clean and orderly fashion prior to opening each morning, during the day, and prior to closing;
To ensure the outside walkways and stairs are clear and safe from obstacles;
To follow opening and closing duties;
To ensure daily cash-out is completed;
To ensure volunteer time sheets are completed by the volunteers on duty;
To perform reasonable tasks requested by the ED in an orderly and timely fashion;
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Create staff and volunteer work schedules for adequate coverage of all front-of-house HR needs for summer interpreters;
Responsible for assigning daily landscape and outside building maintenance, including watering and weeding (e.g., sweeping stairs and walkways);
Set-up schedule and list for personnel cleaning of Nature Centre (e.g., bathrooms, etc.) and outdoor maintenance and landscaping duties;
Miscellaneous Duties & Responsibilities:
Purchases for the Nature Centre, such as cleaning supplies, office supplies, kitchen supplies, school program supplies, or display materials as required;
Purchases over $100 must be approved by ED;
ED may approve mileage for use of personal vehicle for Centre needs (billed at $0.50/km).
