Early Childhood Educator – YMCA – Bedford, Nova Scotia

Reports to: Site Supervisor

Job Purpose          

To create a stimulating, safe and nurturing environment for children to learn and grow, while at the same time providing support to families and to adhere to the Child Care Services Regulations under the Child Care Services Act and YMCA policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities        

Responsible for specific groups of children as indicated in the terms of employment.
Provide direct program leadership, modelling service excellence in children’s program delivery while demonstrating a thorough knowledge of best practices for children and families in accordance with the YMCA Mission.
To be punctual, thus allowing for adequate set up time before program begins, and to dress appropriately according to the YMCA uniform policy standards.
Responsible for attending scheduled meetings, in-service training sessions and taking responsibility for one’s own continuing education (including Child Care Certification), even when sessions may take place outside one’s regular working hours.
Responsible for physical set-up and proper storage and clean-up of equipment and materials used in direct program delivery.
Responsible for maintaining licensing requirements, keeping accurate and organized   records, completing daily health/safety checks and daily log entries, and ensuring all documents pertaining to these items are passed in promptly to supervisor.
Responsible for fostering positive self-esteem in children and following the Y Policy regarding child guidance techniques.
Responsible for ensuring adequate program coverage and attempting to secure a substitute before notifying supervisor of unavailability for work.
Supporting and implementation of the YMCA Playing to Learn Curriculum.
Every YMCA employee is responsible to keep a tidy work area/environment/clean daily
Every YMCA employee has a legal duty to report all child protection issues to the Nova Scotia Department of Community Services; and follow the YMCA Child Protection Policy of the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth.
Other duties as mutually agreed upon with the Child Care Site Supervisor.

Qualifications          

Early Childhood Education Diploma or equivalent
Experience working in early learning and/or school-age environment
Age specific certificates considered an asset (i.e. special needs, infant/toddler, school-age)
Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents and co-workers
Excellent interpersonal skills
Standard First Aid and CPR (C)
Acceptable Certificate of Conduct, Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Protection Records Check

Hours of work

Generally this position is Monday through Friday with some flexibility if needed.
YMCA services are provided when convenient to participants – evening and weekend work may often be required.

Physical Requirements

Every YMCA employee is responsible to keep a tidy work area, setting up and taking down program equipment and keeping a clean facility.
