Early Years Centre at West Highlands School
Regular Full-Time, 35 hrs per week, 10 months

The Early Childhood Educator (ECE) is responsible for effectively delivering the Early Learning Opportunities Program. In doing so, they report directly to the School Principal, and work collaboratively within the school team, with  all staff,  parents,  and community-based professionals and service providers to introduce children into the culture of the school in a way that best supports the learning experience for each child. With a thorough knowledge of early childhood development and the best practices that support early learning and care, the Early Childhood Educator provides a learning environment that is both stimulating and responsive to the children’s interests and developmental capabilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

An undergraduate degree with a specialization in early childhood development or a related field;
Current certification in First Aid and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention.

Experience

Recent experience (within past 5 years) working with pre-school children;

Competencies Required
The Early Childhood Educator shall have the following competencies:

Demonstrated ethical and respectful professional behavior;
Demonstrated ability to provide a child-centered, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate practice;
Demonstrated competency with distributed leadership and shared responsibility (e.g. Parents, community-based professionals, school Principal, other EYC Early Childhood Educator(s) and teachers);
Leadership and management abilities in leading the program and overseeing the management of the Early Years Center within a professional collaborative framework;
Strong communication, knowledge of and interpersonal skills related to initiating and maintaining positive relationships with many partners within CCRSB, with students, parents, community members and external groups such as government agencies and local service providers;
The ability to apply computer skills suitable to report writing, research and communications;
The ability to translate best practice into new situations;
The ability to  apply  understanding of and experience with  developmental observation and assessment;
The ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of social justice, race relations, cross cultural understanding, human rights and diversity;
The ability to promote and maintain confidentiality as the norm;
The commitment to engage in continuing education and professional development.
The ability to understand and effectively utilize data for program improvements (egs. Early Development Instrument, Rourke, Ages and Stages)

Specific Job Components
The Early Childhood Educator, under the direction of the Principal, is responsible for the effective delivery of the ECE Program at the school for the benefit of students, families and the community.  The tasks may vary, from time to time, with the evolution of the program and may include but not be limited to the following:

Create a learning environment that is inclusive and inviting to all who participate in the program;
Observe children on a daily basis to determine their individual strengths, emerging and/or changing needs;
Ensure the delivery of a uniquely creative curriculum that is responsive to the interests, developmental and cultural needs of the participating children;
Support children’s development with materials and resources that focus on social and emotional development, emergent literacy and numeracy skills, and represents the needs and interests of the children in the program;
Facilitate parent involvement and education as part of the program using a strength based model;
Partner with community-based providers (including therapists) to ensure that children’s individual developmental needs are addressed within the context of the Early Learning Opportunities program;
Ensure the continuous assessment of children’s developmental progress and ensure there are appropriate responses;
Co-lead the participation in a comprehensive, ongoing evaluation of the Early Learning Opportunities Program,
Co-lead to support classroom management and procedures that will set the stage for a positive environment.
