Goals of the Position:
The Children’s Education Coordinator will oversee the planning, delivery, evaluation and administration of environmentally themed school programs and activities at GreenUP Ecology Park, as well as classroom visits to local schools. This includes spring and fall school programs, summer activities, and a visiting school program running from October 2015 through March 2016.
The Children’s Education Coordinator will provide experiences for students and teachers to inspire an ongoing interest in local ecology and sustainable living, and teach skills for environmental stewardship.
Responsibilities:
The Coordinator will actively promote programs and confirm all bookings for GreenUP’s educational programs throughout the season. This will include producing and distributing information relevant to families, teachers and children.
The Coordinator will schedule and train instructional staff and interns working with educational programs at GreenUP Ecology Park, in partnership with the Manger of Landscape programs.
The Coordinator will work with GreenUP staff to research, plan and implement a variety of innovative and engaging environmental educational activities for school groups, summer day camp, evening family drop ins, and visits from local youth groups, day care centres, etc.
The Coordinator will assist in the planning and delivery of the Ecology Park Family Night in August, coordinating a variety of nature oriented activities for families.
The Coordinator will be responsible for collecting payment from groups, issuing receipts and evaluation forms, and delivering accurate payment and paperwork to GreenUP Administration.
Responsibilities of this position include preparing detailed and accurate reports and assessments for funders and managers as required; and participate in strategic discussions to maximize effectiveness of children’s programs.
The Coordinator will be responsible for the safety and well being of all participants in children’s programs at all times.
The Coordinator will act as an environmental steward at GreenUP Ecology Park ensuring best practices are implemented with teaching staff and class visitors.
Skills and Qualifications
Post -Secondary graduate in related field of study, preferably with a Teacher’s Certificate.
At least 2 years experience in conducting education programs for children with a proven ability to conduct clear, engaging and effective environmental programs from pre-school to secondary level, including children with special needs.
Demonstrated leadership experience and skills with youth.
Current Negative Ontario Police Vulnerable Sector Record Check and First Aid/CPR (must be available at interview).
Proven commitment to environmental stewardship with an approachable, non-judgmental style of communication with the public and our key stakeholders.
Very well organized and able to work independently and collaboratively with a team.
Ability to be flexible and make confident decisions quickly.
Proven experience with local native plants, wildlife and ecosystems.
Food production, horticultural knowledge and performance- based arts are considered assets.
Ability to work outdoors in a variety of conditions.
A positive, professional and cooperative attitude and a willingness to learn new skills and take initiative.
A mature, self- starter with a strong ability to work with frequent changes to plans.
Terms of Employment
This position is classified as a Temporary Hourly Employee – Part Time position under GreenUP’s Employee Classification Policy 2015.
The position commences October 5th, 2015 and concludes November 6th, 2015. An additional program, subject to funding, is available from October 2015 – April 2016, for up to 22.5 hrs per week.

Wage: $17.75 hr + 4% vacation pay
Hours: 22.5 hours/week (including some evening and weekend work)

*Access to a reliable vehicle is required
Reports to: Manager, Landscape Programs and GreenUP Ecology Park
