Lake Ontario Waterkeeper (LOW) is a growing charity working for a swimmable, drinkable, fishable future. Our programs bring together law, science, culture, and digital media in order to connect and empower people to restore polluted places, protect human health, and promote thriving natural spaces.
We are seeking a full-time web development intern for a 16-week contract to help us improve our websites and develop an exciting new web-based project. Our web projects, including Waterkeeper Swim Guide, have been featured in national media and are used by hundreds of thousands of people to access water quality information.

What you’ll be doing
creating the templates for/ publishing an interactive blueprint on environmental law and investigations on waterkeeper.ca (a Squarespace site)
migrating content from the old waterkeeper.ca website to the existing site
resolving navigation issues and updating CSS on waterkeeper.ca to improve user experience
testing, improving, and launching an online store to sell T-shirts on waterkeeper.ca using existing Squarespace and Stripe tools
providing as-needed support for the overhaul of http://www.theswimguide.org (currently in progress)
providing as-needed assistance with iOS and Android apps (Swim Guide, Drink Guide)
assisting with the planning, design, and development phase of an exciting new web project (the Watermark Project)
This is the perfect internship opportunity for a talented developer looking to develop a portfolio to help secure a full-time position or build a client base.
Required skills and experience
To apply for the position, you must have the following qualifications:
Be very comfortable with CSS3, HTML5, PHP 5.3+
Understanding of application server and development tools, specifically Ubuntu Linux, Git, Apache, Nginx, and MySQL.
Have a minimum portfolio of 2-3 web projects that you worked on, either as part of a paid position, on spec, as a volunteer, or simply for your own interest
Have a degree or certificate from an accredited post-secondary institution (college, university, etc.) (* this is a requirement of the program that funds the position)
Be 30 years old or younger at the time of the internship
Be out of school and seeking employment
Be a Canadian citizen, or permanent resident, or a protected person as defined by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
Knowledge of Squarespace, WordPress, Mailchimp, and Salesforce are an added bonus.
Compensation and hours
This position is funded by the YMCA Digital Skills Youth Internship Program. Compensation and hours are dictated by the program – you will work 35 hours per week for 16 weeks and/or a total of 560 hours. Compensation cannot exceed $21 per hour.
