The Urban Wildlife Program Coordinator leads environmental education programming for the Co-Existing with Coyotes program and coordinates programming specific to Stanley Park urban wildlife. The position involves planning, developing, and creatively delivering ongoing education programs and written materials. The primary audiences are schools, community organizations, the public and the media.
Specific Tasks of the Job:
Respond to daily calls and emails on Coyote Info Hotline/Email.
Deliver coyote community outreach programming at schools, special events, etc.
Respond to media inquiries relating to urban wildlife issues.
Evaluate coyote sighting patterns and inform schools, daycares and other organizations in relevant areas.
Communicate with Ministry of Environment and Vancouver Park Board about areas where individual coyotes are displaying aggressive or habituated behaviour.
Monitor the program’s budget, maintain databases and prepare reports as required for Stanley Park Ecology Society (SPES) Board, staff, and funders.
Work on various SPES projects and programs related to other urban wildlife including birds.
Create and distribute information brochures, posters and signs.
Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
Design and deliver educational programs that capture the attention and imagination of school children and adults.
Confidence and competence in presenting at public venues and for the media.
Successfully work with diverse government and community groups.
Work effectively and tactfully in dealing with urban wildlife related conflicts presented by the public.
Working knowledge of relevant urban wildlife organizations and issues.
Working knowledge and appreciation of environmental issues, and the values and mission of SPES.
Strong interpersonal, communication and leadership skills
Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines and creatively solve problems.
Required Training and Experience
Minimum Diploma or Degree in a related field, and 1 year of transferable experience in a position of similar project management coordination; OR minimum 2-year experience in a position of similar project coordination responsibilities and activities that involved wildlife issues and education.
Excellent written communication and oral presentation skills.
Computer Skills: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, databases.
A valid Driver’s License is required and access to a vehicle is an asset.
Level 1 first aid is an asset.
Hours: 30-35 hours/week (incl. some weekend work) $16.35-$18.07/hour
