Systems Administrator – School District No 34 – Abbotsford, BC

Under the direction of the Director of Technology or designate, the incumbent is responsible for the provision of end-user system software support to schools and district staff. The incumbent will be an active member of the Information Technology team and will also assist with hardware and software troubleshooting for resolution, tracking of all system calls received for follow-up reporting and may be required to deliver basic training sessions. The primary focus is to support system infrastructure, including District servers and Networking in a Level 3 – Multi OS Infrastructure Environment.

The work involves the performance of a variety of technical tasks under limited supervision involving adapting established policies and procedures. Sound judgment is required in handling new assignments and determining new work methods with new and/or unusual problems referred to the Director of Technology or designate. Work is periodically reviewed for quality of service provided and adherence to established standards of performance.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Providing assistance, support and administration, on-site or remotely, of District support system infrastructure, networks and servers including, but not limited to the following duties:
Ensuring functionality of District Firewalls, Proxy servers, gateways and internet filtering utilizing current network security technology including systems managing network access;
Ensuring functionality of District Virtual Servers and SAN infrastructure, including SAN storage management, back-up and restoration;
Performing back-ups and restoration on current District administration systems, servers and infrastructure using current technology;
Ensuring functionality of all SQL database systems;
Ensuring functionality including design of the District’s Active Directory infrastructure including creating technical and operational reports for auditing purposes;
Ensuring continuous functionality of the Central Data Centre, and other Network administration including responding to administration outside work hours to ensure continuous activity;
Assisting and facilitating with full technology life cycles including the deployment, upgrade, implementation, testing and piloting of new and replacement systems, infrastructure and initiatives;
Provide support and administration of Automated Management systems such as Systems Inventory, Patch management, automated software installations and updates;
Analyzing and troubleshooting user hardware and software minor network problems, identifying major problems and referring reoccurring, ongoing and highly complex problems to the appropriate channels for resolution;
Assisting and liaising with software companies regarding problem resolution and clarification of upgrades;
Receiving telephone inquiries and e-mails from District employees and maintaining a detailed log of the nature and follow-up of the inquiry;
Maintaining a working knowledge of district operational/personnel policies related to the position;
Maintaining confidentiality in all matters pertaining to the district and its operation;
Actively participating and offering assistance to all areas of the STaRT Technology team; working on committees as required and offer input in all matters concerning operations;
Performing all other such duties as may be assigned by the Director of Technology or designate;
This will require occasional heavy lifting for mounting equipment into racks such as UPS, switches and Server Chassis.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

The successful applicant will have Grade 12 supplemented by completion of a recognized post-secondary computer technology program or equivalent. Current certifications in Microsoft Certified Systems Expert 2012 (MCSE) or Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) 2008 R2, VMWare Certified Professional (VMware VCP v. 5) is required as well as three to five years of recent infrastructure systems administration experience with a minimum of two years’ experience in technical support in a mixed Windows/Centrify and Apple environment. The incumbent will also have the following:

Considerable experience with various types of computer equipment, file servers, VM’s, SAN’s, LAN’s and WAN’s, peripherals, software installation in multi-platform environments including knowledge of databases and data entry skills;
Advanced knowledge of IP routing and networking (wired/wireless) methods and protocols and hardware (e.g. TCP/IP, RDP etc.) such as HP Switching;
Demonstrated experience with IBM Virtual Center hardware and software;
Demonstrated knowledge of enterprise level antivirus software such as Sophos;
Working knowledge of Palo Alto firewall management and network access control systems such as Bradford;
Proven troubleshooting experience and an aptitude for timely problem solving, analysis and resolution;
Working knowledge of all District server and workstation operating systems;
Working knowledge of HP access point management and servers;
Working knowledge of proper safety practices and the demonstrated ability to work in a manner that recognizes personal safety and the safety of others;
Proven ability to express ideas effectively both orally and in writing with the ability to explain instructions or information clearly to others;
Proven ability to maintain positive interpersonal and communication skills with the demonstrated ability to contribute to an environment which promotes teamwork and customer service excellence;
Proven ability to work in an efficient manner, plan, estimate and organize personal workload, work under pressure and see assignments through to completion;
Proven ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, pushing, pulling and moving materials, equipment and supplies including significant levels of manual dexterity for the purpose of operating keyboards, mouse, hand/power tools and handling computer components;
Proven ability to make sound decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures;
A valid BC driver’s license;
The following skills and current Certifications are desirable:
RHSE – Red Hat Systems Engineer
Hardware / software maintenance experience on SAN NAS systems.
SNIA – Fibre Channel SAN Professional
CCNA – Cisco Certified Network Administrator
A solid working knowledge on networking infrastructure from Cisco.
Working knowledge of Fiber and Cable terminations
Power Shell Scripting training and experience

This is a regular, 12 month position, 8 hours per day and the current salary rate is $32.48 per hour with a comprehensive benefits package.
