The Vancouver Public Library (VPL) is seeking a Systems Support Technician to provide support in the operation, monitoring and maintenance of the Library’s computer systems. Reporting to the Supervisor, Systems Group, the Systems Support Technician works independently and as a member of the team; responds quickly to, diagnoses and resolves system-related problems; is responsible for managing user security by creating, updating and deleting accounts; closely monitors the operation of production servers including checking server status and network status, responding to trouble calls, updating and/or testing software on a number of servers including both Windows and Unix operating systems; and working with precision to ensure the availability of the systems for the users 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Installs, configures, tests and maintains a variety of desktop and laptop computer images as well as associated peripherals; is responsible for the security of deployed desktop software for staff and public; develops methods to deploy upgrades and patches to computers over the network; consults with end users and tests and assists in the integration of new server-based software releases including new ILS modules; tests and assists in the implementation of other standalone and network applications; acts as a resource person to VPL staff and patrons on the VPL systems, including training staff on system function and use; writes, edits, and maintains documentation by developing end user and Systems procedures; incorporates external documentation into internal procedures; performs database maintenance procedures; responsible for independently taking appropriate action for problems that arise on evening and weekend shifts when there is very limited outside support; has the ability to make crucial decisions for the entire system during crises when no supervisor is available; serves on VPL committees and project teams as required representing the department and providing systems expertise; communicates within the department as a team member and within the library with a number of individuals with varying levels of technical expertise; performs other related duties as required.
Work Schedule: Includes regularly scheduled evenings and weekends (Saturdays and Sundays).
Qualifications: Completion of a diploma in computer technology from a two year program or related discipline plus sound related library experience; work experience that includes some assignments in responsible positions or equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the methods, principles and practices used in operating and configuring computers, managing fleets of desktop computers and peripherals; networked working environments and related software applications and utilities as applied to the work performed. Sound knowledge of the operating techniques and procedures applicable to the library’s installations and of the library’s rules for database entry and maintenance; programming languages and techniques related to the work performed. Working knowledge of integrated library software systems, server operations, functions, procedures and organization and of office methods and procedures; PCs and their applications. Ability to: understand and operate VPL computer systems; install PCs, monitors, printers and associated software and to perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment; develop logical approaches to solving problems; understand and interpret relatively complex written and oral instructions and procedures; quickly grasp, retain and correct detail; have a high level of accuracy; write effective documentation for departmental procedures and for end users; communicate in a clear concise manner both orally and in written form; train VPL staff in the use of computer equipment and library applications; establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships and deal tactfully with other staff members; recognize and adhere to schedules and work under pressure; perform assigned duties under minimal supervision. Superior mechanical aptitude.
A valid driver’s license for the province of British Columbia is required.
Salary Range: $30.73 to $36.19 per hour plus a comprehensive benefit package.
