POSITION SUMMARY

The John M.S. Lecky UBC Boathouse requires Rowing Instructors to instruct junior and adult rowing programs. Job responsibilities of varying complexity include: overseeing the safety of all participants, operating a coach boat, instructing participants in all boat classes and at all levels, following training plans for athletes, travelling to regattas, communicating with parents and assisting with boathouse and rowing shell maintenance as needed. This position is integral to the program’s goal of increasing awareness about the sport of rowing and providing opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to better understand the value of teamwork while engaging in a sport that will challenge and develop the entire body.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Provide quality instruction to all rowing participants
Uphold the safety first procedures at all times
Assist Head Coach with training schedule, regatta planning and travel itineraries
Maintain equipment and boat bays
Inventory management and reporting
Minor maintenance and cleaning tasks as necessary
Uphold and enforce facility policies and procedures
Attendance at all mandatory staff meetings
Performing other duties as necessary

This role is integral to the operations and goals of the Department of Athletics Recreation, including excellence in customer service, facility maintenance, and program management. The role will provide front line services to students, faculty, staff, and community users. Students working in this role are required to provide first-class customer service and professionalism while assisting facility patrons in person, online, and over the phone. As a first contact to UBC Athletics and Recreation facilities, it is vitally important that the student assists our patrons in a knowledgeable and professional manner. As our facility patrons are often first time visitors to the university campus, it is essential the successful candidate is welcoming, knowledgeable of campus way-finding, and provides clear and concise directions.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

This position reports directly to the Facility and Programs Manager. The successful candidate will work under general supervision both independently and in a team environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Previous Varsity rowing or previous rowing coaching experience
Able to work evenings and weekends
Willing to obtain First Aid certification

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY

Able to work both in a team environment and independently
Ability to exercise sound judgment to solve problems independently
Ability to learn quickly
Must be detail-oriented
Excellent problem solving skills
Ability to confidently speak to large groups of people

Create relationships with new and experienced rowers taking part in programming at UBC
Coaches will work alongside and be mentored by professional rowing instructors and coaches
Opportunities are provided for students to work during UBC hosted national and international sporting events hosted at the boathouse
Liaising and networking with prominent community youth and recreational rowing organizations

By the end of the work term, the successful John M.S. Lecky UBC Boathouse Rowing Instructor applicant will have will have gained:
