Main Purpose & Function
The City’s Sustainability Group has a temporary full-time maternity leave backfill for a Sustainability Specialist. The Sustainability Specialist is responsible for managing special projects on behalf of, and providing support and advice to, staff throughout the City in order to achieve targets set out in the Greenest City 2020 Action Plan, Renewable City Strategy and Green Operations.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
The Sustainability Specialist manages interdepartmental projects to develop new plans, regulations, and programs that help the City achieve its sustainability goals set out in the Greenest City 2020 Action Plan, Renewable City Strategy and Green Operations. The Sustainability Specialist will be involved in a variety of tasks including managing special projects, undertaking best practice research and contextual analysis, designing and implementing internal and external stakeholder engagement processes, developing business cases, making recommendations to management, delivering presentations to public and professional audiences, and tracking and reporting project progress.
Qualifications
A university degree in planning, environmental science, engineering, or related field, plus at least three years of sustainability-related professional experience. The successful candidate must have experience with a range of environmental sustainability issues, strong verbal and written communications skills, demonstrated ability to catalyze change within an organization while maintaining positive relationships, and demonstrated ability to manage projects. The following are considered assets: formal project management training or experience; background in the Greenest City focus areas; familiarity with designing and applying social marketing and community engagement approaches; demonstrated personal commitment to sustainability; and experience working on projects with a municipal partner or within a municipal or other government setting.
