Job description: Managing Editor: Print and Digital Publications for Atlantic Publishers Marketing Association (APMA)
The Atlantic Publishers Marketing Association (APMA) represents Canadian owned and controlled book publishing companies located in Atlantic Canada. The APMA provides services to its members including publication of two seasonal reading guides and Atlantic Books Today magazine 3 times a year, professional development, advocacy, media relations, marketing and promotion, and organizes projects that nurture industry growth and development including Pitch the Publisher and the APMA Best Atlantic-Published Book Award and maintaining a close relationship with other industry-related groups, including WOTS, ABAS, WFNS, Atlantic Magazines Association and publisher affiliates.
The APMA seeks a skilled Managing Editor to manage the editorial, production and distribution activities associated with the following activities:
Producing a controlled-circulation magazine for book buyers 3 times per year;
Producing two annual print catalogues of new Atlantic books;
Associated digital publishing activities to attract high usage from Atlantic book buyers.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Managing Editor should have the following qualifications: a minimum of three years’ previous experience in consumer or trade magazine publishing on the editorial and production sides; excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills; excellent written communication skills; proofreading and editing skills; knowledge of and experience in print production and website content development and promotion; experience with marketing; financial management including budgeting; computer literacy including experience with website management and social media (a working knowledge of WordPress, MS Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite is vital); experience with managing the content development process from commissioning through to publication; proven ability to delegate and meet deadlines.
Duties include editing, proofing and managing production, layout and distribution/circulation of publications across Atlantic Canada; liaising with customer service representatives who provide services to APMA, managing a team of freelance writers and one graphic designer, sourcing artwork and images, supervising photo shoots, managing advertising sales, brand building and maintaining a lively online presence via website updates using WordPress content management system, preparing and sending monthly newsletters and maintaining a strong social media presence via the APMA’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.
General administrative duties include: maintaining files and organizing documents and archives, responding to requests and inquiries from the public, mail, email and phone communication with members, bookstores and media, maintaining media lists.
Qualified applicants should be able to work independently, and be able to prioritize tasks. Familiarity with writing and publishing in Atlantic Canada and a love of books are essential.
