We are looking for an enthusiastic and revolutionary Information Technology Professional to join us in the newly developed IT Operations Manager role.
Under the direction of the Divisional Manager, Information Technology, the IT Operations Manager is responsible for VIRL’s information and communication technology infrastructure, systems and staffing. This responsibility focuses on the design, development, maintenance, support and security of the enterprise systems.
This position advances the service goals and strategic direction of VIRL by supporting the organization in the development, delivery and evaluation of information technology services that support the Mission, Vision and Values of Vancouver Island Regional Library. The IT Operations Manager develops appropriate working relationships within all levels of VIRL and carries out all responsibilities in a collaborative environment including establishing professional partnerships with external organizations and groups to strengthen VIRL’s profile in all service areas.
You have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Strong interpersonal and communications skills (both written and verbal) including the ability to lead effectively by example;
Experience with technologies related to Network Architecture, Security, Firewalls, Communications, TCP/IP, VPN, Anti-spam, Intrusion Detection, Replication, Backup/Restore;
Knowledge and experience with best practices in IT management, control and monitoring ofserver/network infrastructure;
Ability to manage the implementation of technology projects, utilizing in-house resources, consultants and vendors;
Critical thinking, organizing, problem solving and prioritizing skills;
Knowledge of risk management, audit and compliance and agile methodologies;
The ability to monitor budgets and understand financial reports;
Ability to maintain professionalism, objectivity, confidentiality, tact and diplomacy;
Ability to explain, demonstrate and document complex business and technical concepts; and
Ability to manage, direct, support and coach IT staff on day to day operations.
In this position, your duties may include:
Participate as a member of the Leadership team, contributing to, identifying, developing and implementing strategic initiatives, policies, plans and programs necessary for the success of VIRL;
Manage IT projects through planning, development, implementation and evaluation;
Manage all VIRL computer hardware and software assets;
Identify current trends and developments in information technology;
Manage Information Technology staff including:
Scheduling and assigning work priorities;
Monitoring throughput metrics and addressing performance and productivity deficiencies;
Recruitment, attendance and performance management and the implementation of disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment; and
Coach and mentor staff as required.
Manage VIRL’s Track-it System to identify outstanding tickets, problems and change requests to ensure responsiveness;
Evaluate new software and implement and update as required;
Consult with 3rd party consultants: architect, design and implement VIRL’s networks, servers, applications and cloud based services;
Manage all aspects of network security and connectivity to ensure compliance with best IT and business practices;
Manage data backups/recovery and ensure there is an operational disaster recovery plan in place and that the plan is tested; and
Of course! Other related duties as required.
Education and Experience that would make you stand out:
Completion of a Bachelors’ degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or a comparable degree such as: Bachelor of Science or comparable degree in related field;
Minimum of five (5) years (full time) relevant experience in a similar environment, including three (3) years supervision in unionized work environment;
Project Management, Enterprise Architect, ITIL, and Business Analysis;
Certifications in Virtualization, Converged Infrastructure, Cloud Computing, Mobile Workforce, Networking, SAN, Disaster Recovery; and
Certifications or courses from Microsoft, Apple, Google & Cisco.
You should also know:
You are required to have a valid BC Driver’s License and a reliable vehicle given that there may be travel to various VIRL Branches. You will also be required to satisfactorily complete a Criminal Record Check (Working with Children & Vulnerable Adults).
