Guys Can Cook Chef Instructor

Part-Time, Contract, 5 hours per week

Contract duration: January 14 to February 25, 2016

The Four Villages Community Health Centre has two locations in the west end of Toronto. It is funded by the Toronto Central LHIN.  Four Villages’ mandate is to provide high quality, accessible primary health care that improves the population health of the communities served and works with other agencies to address key social determinants of health impacting health and well-being of clients.  Primary care, clinical services and a wide range of health promotion programs while open to all residents in communities served are targeted to seniors, families with young children, youth and newcomers. Staff collaborate in an inter-professional team environment. The focus is on the client care and their self-care capacity building. We are currently seeking a chef instructor with strong organizational and interpersonal skills to join our dynamic team.

Men Can Cook! is a three-year project (2014-6) of the West End Urban Health Alliance (WEUHA) Nutrition Affiliate, funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Men Can Cook!  Is a program for potentially at-risk male youth (13-24 years of age) to develop skills and knowledge around food.  This program is a partnership between seven Community Health Centres (CHC) and trusteed by Four Villages Community Health Centre. Each CHC partner will host a 7 week workshop series (4 hours per session) each year. Participants will learn to buy for and cook practical, nutritious and affordable meals guided by a chef and a registered dietitian. The program will consist of food and employment skills component and nutrition education. A final report and program manual will be created and disseminated.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide a safe, supportive and stimulating environment for youth
Teach youth basic cooking skills using recipes featured in the Guys Can Cook! Cookbook
Teach youth kitchen safety and the appropriate use of tools and equipment
Be responsive to the needs of youth and respectful of the diverse cultural and religious backgrounds
Work in cooperation with GCC Project Coordinator and other GCC team members and volunteers
Maintain regular communication with Project Coordinator and Steering Committee members regarding equipment, program logistic and other matters as appropriate

QUALIFICATIONS

Professional qualification as a Chef
Completed training in the culinary arts.
Experience of working in industry as a professional cook or chef
Sensitivity to diverse backgrounds and understanding of youth issues
Good oral communication skills
Experience teaching and supervising youth in a kitchen is an asset
Certified in Food Handling and Safety.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment, and to contribute constructively to a healthy working environment

Hours of work:                      Every Thursday 3pm to 8pm
