Position: The Information Technology Division of the Corporate Services Department is seeking a GIS Technician I to fill a temporary, full time position for a duration of up to one year. Reporting to the Manager, Information Technology Division and supervised by the GIS Supervisor, the GIS Technician I performs technical work maintaining the Cowichan Valley Regional District’s (CVRD’s) Geographic Information System (GIS) data. The GIS Technician I: edits GIS data; prepares material for public presentation; records and files plans; maintains the CVRD’s house numbering system; and responds to inquiries related to GIS.
Qualifications: Secondary school graduation plus graduation from a recognized institute with courses in GIS and cartography or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. A minimum of two (2) years of practical experience utilizing a GIS application is required. Experience with ESRI, ArcGIS and AutoDesk AutoCad in a local government environment is preferred. Applicants must have knowledge of programming techniques, languages and customization tools. Knowledge of local government services would be an asset. Applicants must have the ability to: accurately and efficiently perform technical GIS work with ArcGIS Desktop, and Desktop extensions; accurately assist with maintaining GIS data and documentation; establish and maintain courteous, tactful, diplomatic working relationships with other employees, the general public, and regional board members; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing including the ability to interpret and fulfill stakeholder requests; and to work effectively under pressure as a member of a team to meet multiple deadlines. Applicants must be proficient with MS Windows and MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and hold and maintain a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License.
Hours of Work: The temporary full-time position will work thirty-five (35) hours per week, Monday to Friday 8:30 to 4:30. Flex time is offered and a generous benefits package is included.
Salary: This is a temporary, full time union position (CUPE Local 358) with a salary range in three steps of $32.63 – $33.59 – $34.61 per hour (July 2015 wage rates).
