ENVIRONMENTAL/STEWARDSHIP DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION 2015
FOR SUMMER OF 2015 – a 10 week contract position

Introduction:

Camp Kawartha is recognized for its work in promoting environmental education and sustainability. We are continuing to find creative ways of incorporating stewardship into the culture of our summer camp.

The Environmental Director will coordinate environmental and stewardship related programming in all aspects of camp life.

General Duties:

To coordinate the delivery of engaging/inspiring environmental programs throughout summer camp that is consistent with our environmental framework for:
Day Camp
Residential Camp
Tripping Programs
Leadership Programs
Integrate elements of stewardship, where feasible, into every aspect of the camp: theme days, evening programs, interest choice sessions, campfires.
Be a mentor to staff – champion environmentalism, stewardship and sustainability whenever and wherever possible.
To develop environmental leadership opportunities for our Pre Leadership, CSD, WCSD, LIT and WLIT programs
To highlight the sustainable features at Camp Kawartha. To create more opportunities for sustainable education.
Overseeing nature programming during “Nature Camp” – session N

Integrate elements of Coyote Mentoring where feasible
Liaisons with staff from our Environmental Outreach Camps (Wollaston Lake, Juniper Island, Environment Centre) to exchange best practices in programming
Expand nature awareness and nature connection opportunities
Provide hands-on opportunities for nature inspiration – Jack Frost Learning Centre – Nature Playscapes
Expand the “Thank A Farmer Program”
Maintain and expand our gardens. Oversees our Bokashi composting system. Encourages camper involvement in managing compost. Incorporates our solar straw-bale greenhouse into our food systems and as a programming opportunity
Incorporates elements of our outdoor education programming into summer camp
Focuses on water stewardship. Monitor our water consumption – find creative ways to conserve water
Seeks out interesting nature stories and special spots on the range (the erratic, waterfall, underground stream) that connect children to the story of Camp Kawartha’s land.

Scope of Position

The Environmental/Stewardship Director oversees all environmental and stewardship programming for Camp Kawartha’s Summer Camp.
The Environmental/Stewardship Director supervises the Environmental Coordinator (if applicable).

Reporting Relationship:

Reports to and works under the guidance of the Summer Camp Director. Receives strategic direction from the Executive Director.

Working Relationships:

Works collaboratively and in a positive manner with all sectors of summer camp.
Provides leadership and direction for environmental and stewardship programming
Establishes open, thoughtful communication and general positive relationships staff, parents and colleagues
Initiates dialogue and facilitates clear communication with Summer Camp Director.

Control:

Works within administrative policies and procedures as established by the Summer Camp Director and Executive Director

Impact of Error:

Poor judgment could result in detrimental physical safety of visiting clients and as well as cause harm to reputation of the camp. Poor supervision could lead to miscommunication between staff and problems in staff relationships and ultimately a decline in programming standards.

Qualifications and Abilities:

At least 5 years’ experience in teaching environmental, outdoor, summer camp programming
A strong interest is stewardship and environmentalism
Demonstrated leadership skills

Creative and dynamic educator. Able to inspire colleagues and campers to become positive stewards.
Proven ability to organize, deal with logistics and complexity
Excellent knowledge of environmental and outdoor education in particular: natural history, leadership and nature connection.
Exhibits a high degree of initiative and self-direction; good analytical, organizational and high level of oral and written communication skills
Strong computer skills including word processing and data management
Ability to work with tact and discretion, good public relation skills, good project management skills

Education:

University or College Degree in a relevant field.
Teaching certificate preferred.

Credentials (certificates, licences, courses, etc.):

Must have clear Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector check to work near children
