The Opportunity
The Canadian Canoe Museum is seeking a development leader who is an experienced fundraiser and an organizer and manager of development activities and systems. Reporting to the Executive Director and assisted by a Development Manager, the Director of Philanthropy will expand, develop and lead a multi-faceted fundraising program in support of the Canoe Museum’s strategic plan. The Director of Philanthropy will be responsible for major gifts, corporate donations, government grants, and assisting volunteers and an active board of directors with fundraising.
Candidate Profile
The Director of Philanthropy will play a vital role in expanding, maintaining, and fostering relationships within the Canoe Museum’s growing community of donors. A strong communicator, the ideal candidate will inspire major donors and build trust and respect among other senior leaders, staff, and volunteers. The Director of Philanthropy will also work closely with the Board of Directors on strategic planning, matters of governance and recruitment of National Advisory Council and other priorities.
The candidate may be an experienced mid-level fundraiser looking to make the next step in their career or a seasoned senior fundraiser who is adjusting life styles and may be willing to take on this role part time.
Responsibilities
Expand and manage the annual development plan with clear strategies for how to achieve ambitious annual targets
Ensure that best practices and standards are adhered to in all areas of development activity
Oversee ongoing prospect research, identification, and review in an effort to deepen and diversify the prospect pool
Oversee cultivation and solicitation activities, including proposal development, donor engagement, visits, follow-up, etc.
Manage a personal portfolio of major gift donors
Supporting the Philanthropy & Stewardship Committee and an active board of directors in their fundraising efforts.
Develop communications tools to support fundraising efforts
Oversee that all donations are acknowledged appropriately through a comprehensive donor recognition program
Participate in the annual budgeting process; monitor all of the department’s revenue and expenses
Identify and oversee government-grant submissions
Manage annual direct-mail appeals
Oversee the data-entry processes and confidentiality of donor records
Ensure the Canadian Canoe Museum’s compliance with CRA guidelines working with the COO
Qualifications
Experience in the effective management and support of volunteers and board members for major gift fundraising
Proven track record of developing strategies and soliciting gifts over $50k
Proven track record of meeting or exceeding fundraising goals
Sound knowledge of fundraising principles and processes
Demonstrated success in the areas of major gifts, annual giving, donor relations, and government and foundation grants
Good understanding of data-management systems
Superior collaborative and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate others
Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to get along well with a wide range of people
Strong work ethic, superior organizational skills, resourcefulness, and flexibility
Adeptness at planning, prioritizing, multi-tasking, organizing, and stewarding projects and plans while remaining highly energetic and focused
Excellent interpersonal skills, confidence, vision, and business acumen
Proven ability to thrive in a variety of settings and to excel in an environment of change and ambiguity
CFRE designation is preferred but not required
Post-secondary education is an asset but not required
Compensation
Annual salary range of $60,000-80,000
The Trillium Foundation supports a portion of this position.
Level
This is a management level position with currently one direct report however we anticipate that number to grow to two or three in 2016. This position reports to the Executive Director.
The position requires occasional evening and weekend meetings to meet the objectives of the position. Must possess a valid driver’s license, have access to a car and willing to occasionally travel within Canada.
