Communications SPECIALIST
Job Description
Position Summary
We are seeking a full-time Communications Specialist who can think strategically and creatively, conceive and execute communications materials in a variety of media, and is on top of trends in digital communications and marketing. Working as part of our communications team and reporting to the Director of Communications, the Communications Specialist takes the lead on all the digital aspects of our work. This position requires an individual who understands and can deliver effective, integrated communications strategies across multiple platforms. Responsibilities include managing our website, graphic design, web design, social media, video editing, photography and database management. Additional duties include communications planning, writing and editing, media relations and media event management. Experience and/or understanding of the latest campaigning and organizing techniques would be an asset, as would any technical, back-end understanding of information technology.
Website maintenance: Preparing and posting multimedia content to keep the Sierra Club BC website fresh, engaging and on-brand.
Website management: managing users, troubleshooting, working with contractors, analytics, managing content systems, managing advanced uses like photo galleries and forms, design changes, HTML editing.
Drafting and editing written material, from news releases to op-eds to website and other digital content. Demonstrated ability to write persuasive, engaging content adapted across different media will be especially valuable.
Fielding media calls and pitching stories to journalists. Experience and comfort acting as a media spokesperson would be an asset.
Writing and executing communications strategies and plans.
Planning, organizing and executing media events.
Graphic design and layout: backgrounders, fact sheets, brochures, publications, social media graphics and memes, Sierra Report/Annual Report, liaising with printers and mail houses. Demonstrated ability to design compelling, engaging content will be extremely important to this position.
Database management: Maintain supporter information, upload lists, create and maintain media and email lists, and manage connections between website and database.
Online organizing: developing tools and strategies for targeted online engagement and list-building, in cooperation with the Outreach Coordinator and Director of Communications.
Preparing and sending email communication to our database, including drafting, editing and layout. Includes sending newsletters and news releases.
Social media: planning and developing strategies, writing, responding to comments, monitoring and analyzing performance.
Videos: planning, filming, editing, publishing.
Photography and photo editing: Event photography, organizing image database, liaising with photographers and editing photos for print and web formats.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Degree or diploma in communications, graphic design or web design or equivalent experience, as well as a minimum 2 years of communications experience.
Must be highly computer literate, with knowledge of HTML/CSS, Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office. Experience with Salesforce and Mailchimp would be an asset.
Organized and able to handle multiple projects, tight deadlines, rapidly shifting priorities, while maintaining a strong attention to detail.

The position is based in Victoria. Some travel is required. Some weekend and evening work required. Salary will conform to Sierra Club BC’s salary grid. The starting salary for this position is $40716 annually with annual increases. We offer a generous vacation allowance and a solid benefits package.
