Job Description
The Communications and Data Management Technician will support the Conservation Biologist and Principal on one or more of the following projects:
Social media and website development and communications
Fully digitizing our field data management, including selecting or creating an app suitable to remotely input spatially accurate data, creating an Access database, etc.
Develop GIS tools and outputs that improve our ability to work efficiently and provide clients with high quality services and reports
We are open to applicants who feel they have new ideas on how to help a small, conservation-minded ecological consulting improve in any way that meets the criteria of the internship funder (see below)
Specific Responsibilities
Responsibilities will depend on the skillset of the successful candidate(s) and the projects assigned. Examples of responsibilities include:
Managing social media posts on all platforms
Creating social media policy, schedules, and content
Creating a presence for the company on a new social media platform
Updating or redesigning the website
Communicate with partner organizations and clients
Develop a new digital data entry and management system for the company
Selecting ideal hardware (e.g. tablets, GPS units) and software (e.g. GIS extensions, social media scheduling software)
Training staff on using new digital tools
Gather data from various sources to input into mapping software and complete GIS analyses
Compile results into final reports for clients
Required Skills
Digital skills required to help with the selected projects (see job description and application assignment for details)
Excellent written and verbal communications skills
Good organizational and problem-solving skills
Attention to detail
Demonstrated ability to work independently, as part of a team and to collaborate with multiple partners
Proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel and Word
Be legally entitled to work in Canada
Beneficial Attributes
Knowledge of GIS mapping software (QGIS or ARCGIS preferred) and Microsoft Access
Familiarity with biology and ecology including conservation biology, biodiversity and species at risk issues
Have a valid G-class Ontario driver’s license
Experience or training on using social media for small business

Learning provincial policy related to environmental planning, land management and species at risk
Opportunities to go into the field and conduct species surveys and ecosystem monitoring
Training at a CICan member college or institute
Online training (such as LinkedIn learning)

Other examples of possible training include, but are not limited to, software development, data processing, business or project management, leadership, critical thinking, teamwork and collaboration, and communication for business skills.
