The position:
Ecosource is seeking a Sustainability Education Assistant to support youth engagement projects and assist with environmental demonstration projects as part of our sustainability education program. The Sustainability Education Assistant will also support the delivery of virtual workshops for youth and adult participants as well as program partners. This position will involve implementing anti-oppression practices as part of community education on sustainability and climate change.
Responsibilities:
Assist in the planning and implementation of community-designed demonstration projects in the Region of Peel.
Support the Peel Environmental Youth Alliance executive committee in promoting virtual workshops and events through various social media platforms.
Assist in delivering virtual sustainability education workshops for youth participants and program partners.
Assist in project planning and leadership skill-building among youth participants.
Support outreach and engagement of local community members, with a focus on Black, Indigenous and People of Colour, English language learners and other individuals with accessibility needs.
Help to design programs which meet the diverse needs of local communities by working alongside volunteers, external partners, and stakeholders.
Coordinate regular email, written and telephone communication with youth volunteers, program participants and program partners.
Assist with other Ecosource programs as required and represent the core values of Ecosource.
Qualifications:
A passion for environmental issues including waste, energy, water, and sustainable food systems.
Experience in youth education and group facilitation.
Strong belief in creating social change by empowering individuals and families.
Demonstrated commitment to social justice and anti-oppression principles, and an understanding of the impacts of climate change issues on vulnerable populations.
Willingness to undertake physical tasks in an outdoor setting, in a variety of weather conditions.
Experience working with volunteers and delivering educational programming to a diverse audience.
Energetic individual with an ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Highly observant with an attention to detail.
Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to deal compassionately with all members of the community.
Good organizational skills, responsible and creative approach to tasks and problem solving.
Experience with social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube) and website (WordPress) maintenance.
Familiarity with the environmental sector and programming in the Region of Peel.
Valid driver’s license and access to reliable vehicle for transportation.
Access to a personal computer for remote work.
Due to funding requirements, the successful candidate MUST be 15-29 years of age and legally able to work in Canada.
Application Information:
This is a short-term, part-time contract position paid at a rate of $14 per hour, beginning mid- to late-September to late-November 2020 at 30 hours per week. Some weekend and evening work will be required. A Police Check will be required upon hiring.
