Stewardship & Communication Intern – South East Alberta Watershed Alliance – Alberta

Duties and Responsibilities
Under the overall supervision of the Executive Director, work with other SEAWA staff, and volunteers, and perform the following tasks:
Fieldwork tasks including but not limited to the following: organize and haul supplies, tools, and materials; plant shrubs/ trees and do post-planting care (dig plant holes, plant, water, weed, apply mulch, make basins around base of plants, install plant protection cages); purchase tools, supplies, and materials; drive to and from riparian sites.
Clean and organize tools, equipment, and supplies in the self-storage unit or in the office storage.
Document field activities and enter information into SEAWA’s filing system (photos, data collected, GPS locations and maps, expenses); report sightings of invasive plants to EDDMapS and/or rare plants to ACIMS.
Assist in applied research work and data collection; and citizen science data collection as they arise.
Assist in the preparation and holding of SEAWA events: Annual General Meeting, educational forums, open houses, public information sessions, and field tours.
Participate on behalf of SEAWA at community events. Set-up and man the SEAWA booth at these events.
Assist in the holding of committee meetings and take notes.
Attend online webinars and training for own professional development with approval from the Executive Director.
Document own activities and write an article or articles for the SEAWA newsletter.
Administrative and office tasks, and any other task assigned by the Executive Director.

Required Qualifications and Skills
A post-secondary diploma or degree, preferably in any of these fields: environmental science, ecology, biology, ecosystem management, natural resources, or agriculture.
Ability to do field work and some lifting work.
Experience in the use of manual gardening tools (e.g., shovels, spade, shears, loppers, trowel, garden scythe/ sickle) and other basic tools (e.g., pliers, screwdriver, small sledgehammer, hatchet, etc.). Experience in the use of motorized garden equipment (weed whip, small chainsaw) is an asset.
Basic understanding of native shrubs and trees and their growth requirements in a semi-arid climate such as in Southeastern Alberta.
Proficiency in the use of MS Suite – Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; basic use of GIS is an asset.
Ability to learn website posting. Ability to share knowledge through social media.
Excellent technical and plain English communication skills – spoken and written.
A keen interest in and appreciation of the natural environment and processes – water, soils, native vegetation, wildlife, landforms, and ecosystems.
Collaborative and cooperative attitude, respectful, positive and cheerful disposition, and interested in listening to people, and having discussion and sharing of relevant knowledge.
A strong work ethic: punctual, follows schedules, follows instructions, follows safety at work guidelines, and meets deadlines and deliverables.
Works well with minimum supervision.
A valid driver’s license.
Ability to work in a small urban centre such as Medicine Hat.

Position Details
A full-time position starting August 1, 2023 through to November 30, 2023 with potential extension and a move to a permanent position depending on performance.
Wage is $20 – $25 per hour depending on qualifications and all work experience, at 35 hours per week + vacation pay.
Work is approximately 90% field work and 10% office work August to mid-October, and 95% office work mid-October to November 2023. There is no virtual work.
The position is at Medicine Hat, AB
This position reports to the Executive Director
A Police Check and a valid AB driver’s license are required and
Legally allowed to work in Canada.
