Job Description/Responsibilities:
The Species-at-risk Project (SAR) Leader will work under the direction of CARP’s Management Team in a supportive and cooperative team environment. This position will focus on the delivery of monitoring activities for species-at-risk, with a focus on Wood Turtles, Canada Warbler, Eastern Wood-pewee, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Rusty Blackbird, Common Nighthawk, Eastern Ribbonsnake, and Bank Swallow.
An important component of this work includes the engagement of community volunteers to support SAR monitoring and survey activities, and the engagement of landowners to support stewardship activities that benefit SAR. Activities will primarily be focused within the Annapolis River watershed, but in some cases, projects may extend across southwest Nova Scotia. The successful candidate will be required to use their personal vehicle for work travel and will be compensated according to the prevailing provincial milage rate.
This position will require a mix of office and fieldwork. The candidate must have excellent written and interpersonal communication skills and be comfortable working with members of the public and partners from external organizations.
Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
the coordination and oversight of CARP’s volunteer wood turtle monitoring program;
the coordination of field activities, including but not limited wood turtle visual surveys, wood turtle satellite and radio-tracking, wood turtle nesting surveys, breeding bird surveys, eastern-ribbon snake visual surveys, eDNA collection, bank swallow breeding colony surveys;
the coordination of a Bank Swallow Nest Watch team;
the identification of sites for monitoring and field activities in collaboration with other project leaders, including the Agro-ecosystems Stewardship Project Leader;
support for in-field monitoring and survey activities;
communication with landowners and managers to secure permission to access private lands for field activities;
the recruitment and retention of community volunteers to support SAR related project activities;
the collection of habitat and other site data to support activities such as stewardship planning;
the development of outreach materials;
support for stewardship planning, in coordination with the agro-ecosystems project team and external partners;
Support to landowners for the implementation of SAR stewardship activities;
data entry, review, synthesis and analysis;
the use of ARC GIS to develop maps for project planning, reporting, or other purposes;
report writing;
support for other CARP projects/activities as required;
participation in staff meetings and project planning meetings as required.
Desired Experience:
Survey or monitoring experience for any of the relevant target species: Wood Turtles, Canada Warbler, Eastern Wood-pewee, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Rusty Blackbird, Common Nighthawk, Eastern Ribbonsnake, and Bank Swallow;
Experience leading/delivering volunteer programs;
Experience developing and delivering outreach and education programs
Experience working with private landowners on stewardship activities/projects;
Experience writing technical or scientific reports;
Experience with data management and analysis.
Reporting Relationships:
The SAR Project Leader will report to CARP’s Management Team on matters specific to the delivery of programs/projects and day-to-day logistics (project tracking and file sharing, use of shared equipment, assignment of auxiliary staff for tasks related to this project, etc.), and to the Administration Manager on all HR, contractual reporting, and financial matters (e.g. travel claims, sick days, alternate work hours and vacation). The SAR Project Leader works closely and in cooperation with other staff members and in accordance with all CARP policies approved by the Board of Directors. The SAR Project Leader will have the responsibility of overseeing technical staff working on CARP’s SAR project, and will work under the direct management of the Terrestrial Program Manager.
